About this file

This technical specification details requirements for a ±30 kV Nanosecond Pulse Generator for the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) project at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The pulser is designed to drive a strip-line kicker for hadron beam injection into the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR), with key technical specifications including a maximum amplitude of 30 kV at 50 Ohm, amplitude adjustment range of 10-30 kV, two synchronous output channels with +/- polarity, and a pulse duration of 40 ns. The device must operate at a 1 Hz repetition rate, with a burst mode of 4 pulses at 5 Hz, and feature both local and remote control capabilities.

The specification outlines comprehensive requirements for environmental conditions (18-30°C ambient temperature, 90% max humidity), warranty (minimum three years), and compliance with EMC regulations IEC 61000-6-2 and IEC 61000-6-4. Deliverables include two sets of operation/maintenance manuals, test/inspection procedures, engineering drawings, and source code for any programmable components. The pulser must be constructed with solid-state devices, provide arcing and reflection protection, use air cooling, and have a Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) of over 10,000 hours. The document is part of the EIC Project at Brookhaven National Laboratory, managed by Brookhaven Science Associates.

1 SCOPE

This specification defines the technical requirements for a bipolar dual-channel ±30 kV/40 ns pulser to be used at the Electron-Ion Collider (EIC) at Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL) managed by Brookhaven Science Associates (BSA).

1.1 Background

The EIC Project will design, build, and install the accelerator hardware for a new electron storage ring, an electron injector, and modifications to the hadron ring required to produce an electron-ion collider and infrastructure. It will include one interaction region, with an allowance for a second, and one detector. The facility is designed to meet requirements to ensure high reliability and availability for the user program.

This ±30 kV pulser will be used to drive a strip-line kicker required for the injection of the hadron beam into the Hadron Storage Ring (HSR). The pulse amplitude driving the kickers will need to be varied from 10 – 30 kV to accommodate these beam energies.

2 APPLICABLE DOCUMENTS

The following specifications, standards and drawings form a part of this specification to the extent specified herein. Unless otherwise specified, the issues of these documents shall be that in effect on the date of the solicitation or contract. Exceptions must be approved in writing by BSA.

In the event of a conflict between the applicable documents and this specification, the Contractor shall immediately notify the BSA Contractual Representative who shall in each instance determine which document takes precedence and advise the Contractor accordingly. Failure to notify BSA of a document conflict shall not relieve the Contractor’s responsibility to ensure full compliance to all requirements.
