About this file

This is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the development of the Particle Accelerator Lattice Standard (PALS) for the NP AI-Ready Accelerator Data (NARAD) effort. The work is being subcontracted to Cornell University by Brookhaven National Laboratory (BNL), which is part of the Department of Energy-Nuclear Physics (DOE-NP) funded NARAD program headed by TJNAF. The technology area is Accelerator Technology and Control Systems, and the document was created in August 2006.

The project objective is to develop the international PALS standard and its extension for Machine Learning applications within the NARAD effort. This includes building interlaboratory consensus on common standards, converting existing accelerator descriptions from BNL and JLAB machines, interfacing PALS with digital twins, and defining interfaces between PALS and Machine Learning applications. The scope consists of seven tasks: (1) interlaboratory consensus building for the PALS standard; (2) continuous extension of PALS as new accelerator needs arise; (3) outreach and training for standard implementation; (4) conversions of existing BNL and JLAB accelerator descriptions; (5) interface software development for modeling tools and control system programs; (6) interfacing PALS with digital twins for BNL and TJNAF accelerators; and (7) defining PALS interfaces for Machine Learning/AI applications. Regular updates will be provided as presentations during weekly NARAD meetings. The information is controlled under U.S. Department of Commerce Export Administration Regulations as EAR99 Technology.
