About this file
This is a Feature Work List for the Wandering Prospector Project in Colorado, detailing mine closure and remediation work across 23 identified mining features. The project involves closing abandoned shafts, stopes, and adits using various closure methods including reinforced polyurethane foam plugs, concrete monolithic plugs, native rock bulkheads, hand backfill, and grated adit closures with bat gates. The work encompasses features at depths ranging from 8 feet to over 100 feet, with excavated dimensions varying from 4 feet by 4 feet to 10 feet by 8 feet. Material quantities specified include polyurethane foam ranging from 5 to 15 cubic yards per feature, concrete requirements up to 10 cubic yards, rockfill specifications of 1 to 4 cubic yards, and pressure-treated timber posts for reinforced closures. Features are distributed across multiple UTM NAD83 coordinates, with work locations requiring varying access methods from mini equipment to foot access only, with some features located within designated Wilderness areas.
The project includes specific closure specifications referenced to Standard Work Specifications (SWS) and standard drawings, with work descriptions detailing preparation requirements, material placement sequences, curing times, and finishing specifications. Several features present special considerations including hantavirus mitigation requirements for adit debris removal, coordination with nearby mountain bike park trails, overhead power line hazards, and environmental protections for wildlife such as bat gates. One feature (WP-14) is marked for exclusion and closing. Additional constraints include difficult access routes requiring careful disturbance minimization, foot access only requirements for wilderness features, and on-site material sourcing for backfill operations with material designations to be determined by the Project Manager. Drainage requirements vary by feature, with standard drainpipes required for most closures and monument pipes specified for reinforced foam plug installations.

Reinforced Polyurethane Foam Plug
See Description 388407.02 4355048.62
Install a Reinforced Polyurethane Foam (PUF) Plug.
The closure shall be constructed in a similar manner to a Concrete Monolithic Plug (SWS 7) except substituting PUF for concrete. The PUF plug will also be reinforced using pressure treated 4”x4”x12’ posts. Prior to installing PUF, four (4) reinforcing posts shall be placed horizontally roughly three (3) feet above the bottom of the opening. Posts shall be parallel and spaced twenty-four (24) inches apart. Both ends of the reinforcing posts shall be keyed into the sides of the shaft, keeping the posts level with each other. Installed posts should resemble floor joists. Trimming posts may be required for proper fitment. Contractor must ensure that the posts are anchored and don’t “float” as the PUF rises and that both ends are fully encased with foam. PUF must be installed slowly to prevent voids from forming below the reinforcing posts. Once the final lift of PUF has solidified, a one (1) inch uniform layer of fill material shall be shoveled over the surface to protect the PUF from sunlight and vandalism. The PUF plug must cure for a minimum of forty-eight (48) hours before finishing the remainder of the backfill. Backfill material will be designated by the Project Manager. Minor adjustments to this specification may be required in the field to properly construct the closure. All personnel working in or around the opening must be harnessed and tied off to a secure point. Twelve (12) cubic yards of PUF and four (4), twelve-foot-long (12’) pressure-treated 4x4-inch posts (4”x4”x12’) are required for this closure.
Rockfill or a drainpipe are not required. A standard monument pipe is required.
