About this file

This document is a detailed specifications sheet for a 3-D scanning system procurement by John Day Fossil Beds National Monument. The National Park Service requires a high-precision desktop 3D scanning system using non-contact optical scanning technology (structured light, laser, or equivalent) to digitize paleontological specimens, geological samples, and museum objects for scientific documentation, conservation workflows, and digital preservation. The specified brand name system is the Artec Micro II scanner with Artec Studio 20 software (Lifetime license), though "brand name or equal" alternatives meeting the salient characteristics are acceptable.

The scanner must deliver high-accuracy digitization of fine surface textures and micro-features on items typically under 100 mm, feature an automated rotational platform for full-coverage scanning, maintain high repeatability for scientific and curatorial documentation, and include a compact benchtop design. The bundled software must provide full standalone functionality including automated and manual alignment, registration, cleanup, smoothing, mesh generation, and export capabilities in industry-standard formats (OBJ, STL, PLY), with calibration and diagnostic tools. The software must operate on NPS Windows systems without requiring proprietary cloud subscriptions. The contractor shall provide a one-year commercial hardware warranty covering all components and software update rights, along with ongoing technical support including email/phone support during business hours, remote troubleshooting, installation/calibration assistance, and access to training materials. Delivery is required to John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Kimberly, Oregon, during business hours (8:00 AM–4:30 PM, Monday–Friday), with the primary point of contact being Nicholas Famoso, Paleontology Program Manager/Museum Curator.
