Background & Introduction
The Park Big Bend National Park is a vast reserve in remote west Texas.
The park encompasses over 800,00 acres, or 1,250 square miles, of rugged and highly varied landscape. There are three distinct environments in the park: the Rio Grande, including its riparian corridor and canyons; expanses of northern Chihuahuan Desert;
and the Chisos Mountains, a sky island with forested valleys. The park receives more than 350,000 visitors annually and attendance has increased each year for the last three years.
Legislation to establish Big Bend National Park passed Congress in June 1944, signed by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Official protection began in 1933 as Texas Canyons State Park.
Given the park’s vast area and dispersed visitation, the interpretive and orientation strategy of multiple smaller visitor centers serves its 300,000 plus annual visitors well. This project kicks off EDX’s design efforts for two visitor centers with one contract and schedule.
Persimmon Gap Visitor Center is located at the north border of the park at the entrance station on US 385. It is the only visitor service in this part of the park. It is situated in the midst of the Chihuahuan Desert at 2,848 feet elevation.
Visitation
• Annual visitors to Big Bend National Park, 2016: 388,290
• Annual vehicles recorded entering at Persimmon Gap, 2016:
56,954
• Visitorship is increasing (+16% last year and up to 25% increase a year in previous years)
The Visitor Center Building
Persimmon Gap Visitor Center: Exhibit design for total of 1,428 square feet of exhibits, including desk, exterior area, exhibit area/lobby, theater room. The visitor center is open daily in the high season and on weekends only in the summer. The visitor center is closed at lunchtime.
An important factor for this project will be the schedule and scope of building modifications to be performed by the park.
Accessibility Narrative Design will fully comply with physical and programmatic accessibility strategies, including, but not limited to:
• Universal design of the physical environment including adherence to ADA/ABA requirements.
• Incorporation of meaningful tactile elements to bring the exhibits alive for visitors with low vision and blindness.
• Open captioning of AV content for visitors with hearing impairments.
• Audio description available to visitors upon request (NIC).
Scope and Budget The Production Budget for both projects shall include:
• All costs for purchasing, fabricating, transporting, and installing all exhibit elements as specified in the “National Park Service Standard Exhibit Planning, Design, & Fabrication Specifications, October 2012” and its attachments.
• Related fabrication costs including but not limited to project management, shop drawings, samples, packing, shipping, and project closeout.
• Production of original artwork including, but not limited to, illustrations, maps, and photographs.
• Acquisition of all pre-existing images required for the exhibition, including use-rights for the life of the exhibition.
• Production or acquisition of all custom elements including natural history models, taxidermy, reproduction furnishings, topographic maps, architectural models, sculpted or cast figures, custom electronic elements, specialty and exhibit lighting track and fixtures, and mechanical and electro-mechanical devices.
• Fabrication and installation of the new information desk.
The Production Budget for both projects does NOT include:
• Architectural modifications or other building upgrades.
• Electrical wire for any proposed additional exhibit lighting features.
• General building work, such as demolition of existing exhibits, carpet, and painting.
The Scope of Work for this project additionally calls for the exhibit design process to:
• Review all of the current spaces and make recommendations for alternate arrangements to increase visibility of the information desk and create better visitor flow.
• Look at the entire visitor experience within the visitor center in a holistic way.
• Propose alternate space arrangements that do not change the overall allocation of space.
Design Process The following deliverables comprise the Production Documents II phase.
This Production Documents II Graphics Package
• provides all revised graphic layouts with revised text.
PDII Production-Ready Graphic Layouts
• individual files for each graphic layout. They provide all the information for fabricators to create the graphic layouts in packaged InDesign files.
Production Documents II Drawing Set
• shows graphic elements in context, describes materials, and describes exhibit structural elements and details.
Production Documents II Reference Package
• includes written descriptions and images to provide background information and design intent needed for fabricators to produce custom elements.
Production Documents II Database
• provides a list of all elements in the exhibit, including: custom elements (CE), graphic layouts (GL), accessioned objects (AO), shows proposed images (IM) and whether they are For Position Only (FPO) or are the intended image for the panel.
Use-rights Documentation Package:
• includes information documenting all images and their rights and licensing requirements.
Production Documents II November 25, 20194 Big Bend National Park
Exhibit “Big Idea” The generation of a main message or Big Idea is an important part of the exhibit design process to verify the visitor experience.
EDX led a brainstorming exercise that generated material that EDX used to create the following Big Idea for Persimmon Gap:
Great adventure awaits beyond the gap.
Interpretive Themes The Scope of Work and a Theme Weighting exercise at the kickoff meeting established the following themes from the Scope of Work to be explored during the exhibit development process. For brevity, they are listed here by their quick-reference name with excerpts from the theme.
Persimmon Gap
40% Orientation to the park and trip planning
25% Inspiring Wilderness
The rugged and remote wilderness/canyons/vast expanses. Inspire adventure, wonder, reflection, and rejuvenation.
25% Desert, River, Mountains
The convergence of desert, mountain, and river ecosystems supports a diversity of life and abundant opportunities for recreation, exploration, and education.
10% Adaptations to Survive, Paleontology/Geology, Human History
Experiential Goals These goals were generated by workshop participants during a brainstorming exercise at the project kickoff meeting focusing on the visitor experience. These goals helped inform the criteria against which the park evaluated the Schematic Design I alternatives.
Visitors to Persimmon Gap will:
• Get oriented, know what to do in the time they have
• Find information about how to safely explore the park at all hours
• Be able to find and greet someone in uniform
• Be able to find a clear route into the visitor center and the restroom
• Easily locate information about campgrounds
• Enjoy a picnic in the shade
• Be able to buy something that expands their visit
• Feel encouraged to spend extra time in the park
Exhibits at Persimmon Gap will:
• Provide new information; won’t repeat a story told elsewhere
• Tell stories that are connected to a larger concept of adventures
• Include the Comanche Trail
• Tell a story unique to the place
• Highlight the top ten things to do in the park
• Provide exploration opportunities by interpreting plants, animals, and geological forms visitors may see in the park
• Get kids excited about exploring the park and entertain them while their parents are trip planning
• Provide large-scale photographs of the sights of the park
• Inspire visitors to discover beyond Persimmon Gap
• Include the story of the building and why it’s here
Project Goals and Interpretive Framework: Persimmon Gap VC

Overview
An illustrated map of the entire Big Bend National Park fills the center of the visitor center floor. The map is colorful with labels for different regions of the park and icons indicating activities that can take place. Different sections of the park correspond loosely to exhibits around the map.
The east side of the visitor center highlights adventures easily accessed from the east side of the park: the Fossil Discovery Exhibit, watching wildlife, and backcountry drives.
Along the left-hand walls there are two dioramas, one highlighting wildlife-viewing possibilities in the park and the other features backcountry roads that visitors can drive. The wildlife vignette shows a slice of the Chihuahuan Desert at dawn with sculptures of a mother and young javelina with a roadrunner nearby. The Backroads vignette features a portion of a life-size jeep coming out of the background photomural. Towards the center of the room free-standing cube focuses on the Fossil Discovery Exhibit and has a large chunk of fossiliferous rock from the park.
Scene Purposes
• Welcome visitors to explore the “great adventure that awaits beyond the gap.”
• Inform visitors about the rich paleontological history found at the park and pique interest in going to the Fossil Discovery Exhibit.
• Provide a sense of the diverse natural environments and their plants and animals—all within this one park.
• Allow visitors to understand how to safely access the park on backcountry roads.

Life Stories in Stone Big Bend’s rock layers preserve over 130 million years of life. There are giant bony fish, horned dinosaurs, giant alligators, and more than 1,200 other fossilized species.
This remarkably intact rock record captures dramatically different chapters in Big Bend’s history: ancient tropical seas, coastal floodplains, and winding rivers.
This is a view of the nearby landscape where we found this specimen.
If you find a fossil, it may be a new discovery. Take a photo and leave it in place.
Then note the location and tell a ranger.
This piece of limestone rock preserves fossils from a time when
Big Bend was under the waters of a tropical sea. It’s about 100 million years old.

BIG BEND NATIONAL PARK
Where to Find Wildlife
Watching Wildlife
Big Bend’s diverse ecosystems overlap to create homes for many different animals.
Desert animals are usually active during the cooler parts of the day.
It’s smart for people to follow the ways of the wildlife: rise early, take a siesta, and enjoy the evening.
We love Big Bend National Park.
A beautiful, tranquil environment with big, rugged mountains, pretty desert flowers, and BEARS!
Yes, bears.
—Park visitor from Sugar Land, Texas
In late summer and early fall you may see thousands of Texas lubber grasshoppers. They are big and chunky. Their wings flash red when they fly.
Wild animals are healthiest when they find their own food. Human food can make animals sick, aggressive, and bring them close to dangerous roads. Help us keep wildlife wild and safe.

Chisos Mountains
Rio Grande

Desert
In the desert, look and listen for coyotes, javelina, collared lizards, cactus wrens, tarantulas, and desert cottontail rabbits.
Along the Rio Grande, look for bobcats, two-tailed swallowtail butterflies, vermilion flycatchers, beavers, Big Bend slider turtles, and common black hawks.
Up in the Chisos Mountains, you may find black bears, mountain lions, gray foxes, Carmen white-tailed deer, peregrine falcons, Mexican jays, rock squirrels, and ringtails.

Have you ever seen the Milky Way? Look for it arcing across the moonless Big Bend sky.
Big Bend offers prime viewing for spectacular meteor showers throughout the year.
Big Bend is an International Dark Sky Park because of the exceptional quality of its starry nights.
Ridiculously far away from everything, which is why this is THE place for stargazing in the continental United States. The night sky was phenomenal and it is something that I cannot do justice with words.
—Park visitor from Dartmouth, United Kingdom
Pullouts along the paved roads can be great places to enjoy the night sky.
Backcountry camping can provide especially rewarding views of the stars.
The park has some of the darkest night skies in the country because we’re far from major cities. Almost anywhere in the park is a good spot to enjoy the darkness and spend some time with the stars.
When you turn off the lights, you’ll be amazed to see the stars that come out.

Overview
While looking south out the majestic view window, the exhibits showcase the highlights of the south areas of the park: ways to experience the river, backpacking, and hiking.
Graphics describe how to visit different areas while a bench provides a restful moment to enjoy the view. Panels and shelving on the sides and back of the bench provide ways to plan for a backpacking or hiking adventure, including packing your pack and lifting the amount of water you’ll need to carry.
A nearby bird-watching interactive has a simple viewing scope and images of the bird sculptures.
Scene Purpose
• Inspire visitors to explore the waterways and hiking trails.
• Show the range of ways that these special environments can be experienced.
