2. Location and Description

Friendship of Salem

Friendship of Salem is a full-scale replica of a 1797 square-rigged sailing ship. She is berthed on the West Face of Derby Wharf at Salem Maritime National Historic Site, 160 Derby St., Salem MA 01970. The vessel is moored alongside a floating dock, with her inshore side approximately 20’ from the wharf edge.

Friendship has 3 masts, the tallest of which measures 115’ from the waterline and that are comprised of 3 overlapping sections. Each mast has 4 horizontal spars, called yards, the longest of which measures 60’. Friendship of Salem is 170’ long and is 32’ wide at the widest point of her hull. Three spars comprise the head-rig of the ship and extend approximately 70’ forward from the bow, at an angle to the vertical of approximately 30 degrees. Currently the three lower masts are in the ship, however all spars may be removed and/or replaced as part of this contract. Selected pages from the plans and photos of the vessel are included with this solicitation.

Most work under this contract is anticipated to be performed at Salem Maritime NHS, 174 Derby Street and on the open fields and wharves across the street from this address.

Some work under this contract may be required at additional locations, including, but not limited to:

• Saugus Iron Works, located at 244 Central Street, Saugus, MA 01906

• Gloucester Marine Railways, located at 81 Rocky Neck Avenue, Gloucester, MA 01930 (19 miles from Salem Maritime NHS)

• St. Joes Polish Club, located at 170 Derby Street, Salem, MA 01970

Site visit and pre-bid conference will be held on June 16th, 2025, from 1000 – 1100 at Salem Maritime National Historic Site, located at 174 Derby Street, Salem, MA. Attendees should meet at boarding facility for Friendship of Salem on Derby Wharf, across the street.

4. Scope of Work

The contractor shall provide all services, labor, travel, crane, crane operator, flatbed truck/trailer and equipment (not including rigging to be used below the hook) necessary to lift masts, yards and other components on/off the ship and/or from one shore location to another. This work supports a major rigging project to repair and reinstall the vessel’s rigging, to be accomplished by NPS personnel and possibly other contracts.

However, if needed, all services, labor, travel, crane, crane operators and equipment (not including rigging to be used below the hook) described in this scope of work can be utilized for other tasks including, but not limited to, removal/placement of rooftop HVAC units, tree work (in conjunction with other NPS contracts or service agreements), relocation of large shafts or logs, etc.

This contract requires the services of a certified and licensed crane operator and mobile crane, with current Hoisting License (issued by the state) for the operator and yearly crane safety report and certificate (issued by a 3rd party inspector as required by OSHA standards) for the crane, provided with the quote materials and available for inspection on each day of operation under this contract.

The anticipated work sites can support the use of a crane and equipment weighing up to 60 tons.

Requests for use of equipment exceeding this must be submitted, in writing, to the COR.

The spars and attached rigging weigh between 800 and 10,000 lbs. and their centerlines are located approximately 70’ horizontally from the estimated location of the crane’s pivot. The required lifting capacity, as listed below, is in excess of the actual load weights as additional strain is typically needed to overcome binding and friction.

The following documents are provided for further information and details related to the execution of this contract:

• Selections from design plans for Friendship of Salem:

o Subsheet OUT1 – OUTBOARD PROFILE o Subsheet R1 – SPAR_SAIL PLAN o Subsheet A3 – DECK ARRANGEMENT

The crane must be able to, using main boom alone, lift up to 14,000 lbs. to a hook height of 95’ above the waterline, which, at high tide, is typically 4 feet below the level of the crane’s wheels.

Lifts requiring the jib will weigh up to 4,000 lbs. The crane must be able to accommodate this lift to a hook height of 120’ above the waterline. A jib does not need to be used if the crane is otherwise able to achieve this lift.

The flat-bed truck/trailer must be able to accommodate the weight and dimensions of two of the largest masts with rigging installed. It will have a bed length approx. 43’, bed width approx. 8’6” wide, and a capacity of approx. 35 tons.

Any additional lifts/tasks will fall within the limitations described above.

A full day of crane or flat-bed service will consist of travel, set-up and take-down and approximately 6.5 consecutive hours of use between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.

A half day of crane or flat-bed service will consist of travel, set-up and take-down and approximately 3.5 consecutive hours of use between 8:00 AM and 6:00 PM.
