About this file

This document is a technical specification for replacement UV lamps required for the Pendills Creek National Fish Hatchery's water purification system. The hatchery produces 1 million lake trout yearlings annually for the Great Lakes and operates an ULTRAQUA UV-system (MR50-350PP Open channel) designed and manufactured in Denmark that purifies 4,000 gallons per minute of creek water. The system requires 50 UV bulbs that have reached their end-of-life cycle at 16,000 hours and must be replaced to maintain water disinfection efficacy critical to fish health, particularly during the delicate fry stage.

The required lamps are Low-Pressure High-Output (LPHO) amalgam UVC lamps with 350W nominal power operating at approximately 254 nanometers germicidal wavelength. Key specifications include: linear tubular design with high-purity fused quartz envelope, high-output configuration producing up to two-thirds more UV output than standard lamps, optimized for use with high-purity quartz sleeves (>95% UV transmission), electronic ballast compatibility designed for LPHO amalgam lamps, short warm-up time, and rated lifetime of approximately 16,000 hours. The lamps feature long-life amalgam design to reduce UV depreciation and maintain stable output, Teflon-coated wiring, and compatibility with UltraBarrier/UltraAqua UV reactor systems. The lamps are manufactured in Germany and optimized specifically for water disinfection reactor applications.

Background:

The Pendills Creek NFH produces 1 million lake trout yearlings annually for the Great Lakes. To accomplish this, an ULTRAQUA UV-system (MR50-350PP Open channel) was installed to purify 4,000 gpm of creek water that feeds the hatchery. The system was designed and built in Denmark and requires

50 UV bulbs. The bulbs have a 16000-hour life expectancy and must be replaced periodically to maintain efficacy. The system pre alarm indicates that the bulbs are reaching the end of their expected life and must be replaced soon. The health and welfare of the fish depend on a clean water supply free of disease-causing microbes, especially the delicate fry stage.

Lamps salient characteristics

Lamp Type and Technology

• Lamp type: Low-pressure high-output (LPHO) amalgam UVC lamp

• UV spectrum: Germicidal UVC (~254 nm) for microbial inactivation

• Technology: Amalgam mercury discharge lamp, designed for high UV intensity and stable output across temperature ranges.

Electrical Characteristics

• Nominal power: 350 W

• Operating current/voltage: determined by the specific ballast and reactor design (typically high-current LPHO configuration).

• High-output configuration (HO): produces significantly higher UV power than standard low-pressure lamps.

• Primary wavelength: ~254 nm (germicidal UVC)

• High UV intensity: HO lamps can produce up to ~2/3 more UV output than standard lamps of similar dimensions.

• Optimized for UV transmittance: typically used with high-purity quartz sleeves (>95% UV transmission).

Mechanical Characteristics

Typical properties for this lamp series:

• Lamp type: Linear tubular lamp

• Quartz envelope: high-purity fused quartz

• Configuration: often single-ended or double-ended electrode depending on reactor

• Compatibility: used in UV reactors such as UltraBarrier / UltraAqua systems.

Operational Characteristics

• Operating temperature range: optimized for water disinfection reactors

• Warm-up time: short stabilization period for full UV output

• Ballast requirement: electronic ballast designed for LPHO amalgam lamps

• Typical installation: inside a quartz sleeve within stainless-steel UV reactors

Lifetime / Long-Life Design

• Rated lifetime: typically ≈16,000 hours for 350 W Ultratherm LPHO lamps.

• Longlife amalgam design reduces UV depreciation and maintains stable UV output over time.

• Wire coating Teflon Manufactured in Germany
