About this file
This document is an Engineering Form 4055 Riprap Gradation Curves and Tally Chart used to measure and record stone gradation specifications for riprap material. The chart provides detailed technical guidance for measuring stone weights, sizes, and percentage composition across multiple weight ranges from less than 15 pounds to over 400 pounds. The gradation curves are designed to help contractors precisely assess and document the composition of riprap material, with specific instructions for recording individual stone weights across seven different weight categories and calculating cumulative percentages.
The accompanying documentation recommends a test sample size of approximately 16,000 pounds and provides a systematic method for documenting stone weights, including total weight calculations and percentage finer by weight analysis. The chart allows for precise tracking of stone characteristics, with guidance on plotting cumulative percentages on the gradation curves chart, ensuring contractors can meet the specific riprap material specifications required for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project involving riprap supply for Pool 11 of the Mississippi River near Cassville, Wisconsin.

1. - Recommended test sample size is approximately 40 times the top-size weight ≈ 16,000 pounds.
2. - 100% of the sample will be finer by weight than the heaviest individual stone weight plus one pound. Heaviest weight plus one will be plotted on the 100% Finer by Weight line of ENG Form 4055 - RIPRAP GRADATION CURVES. The totaled weights of all columns A - G should equal the initial test sample weight “X”.
3. - The Cumulative Percent Finer By Weight number for each column is plotted on ENG Form 4055 - RIPRAP GRADATION CURVES chart, on the weight increment line of the next column's weight range low number, i.e. column B cumulative percent would be plotted on the 50 pound line of the 4055 chart.
