About this file
This is an Industry Day Question and Answer document from a BRDEE (Bioeffects Research on Directed Energy) contract solicitation. The BRDEE contract was awarded under a closed call Broad Agency Announcement (BAA) solicitation within the CHEERS Multiple Authority Announcement (MAA) umbrella framework.
The Q&A session addresses technical evaluation criteria and current research capabilities. Key focus areas include modeling and simulation tools, specifically the B.Tech model (a 2D symmetry laser tissue interaction model) and a Python-based Pack 1B code for one-dimensional ablation transfer analysis. The government expressed interest in advancing in vitro models using more sophisticated tissue structures and organoids to align with existing data. New scenarios must align with the organization's mission and are driven by external interest. Additional discussion covered Laser Eye Protection (LEP) equipment used in testing and evaluation, with eye protection identified as a priority area for directed energy research. The government's role encompasses both assessing existing and emerging technology samples and conducting basic research to define protection requirements and design specifications against damage.

Industry Day
Question and Answer Session
Q: BRDEE was awarded like a traditional MAA type award?
A: The BRDEE contract was solicited under the BRDEE closed call BAA solicitation under the CHEERS Multiple Authority Announcement (MAA) umbrella.
Q: Within technical, are there uniqueness, innovation, and developments that are critical to the evaluation?
A: Yes. All of the above.
Q: Within the modeling and simulation piece can you talk about the current tools that are in use?
A: Yes, we have a variety of codes. So the longest standing one is the the B.Tech model, which is a 2D symmetry laser tissue interaction model. There's also a pack 1B code which is a Python based code that looks at one dimension transfer of ablation.
Q: Within the in vitro model, are you looking at more sophisticated tissue models, organoids?
A: Yes. We do want to look at that because the closer we get to existing data, the better.
Q: Are you all interested in developing scenarios or situations versus sort of expanding out what you already have or just supporting existing scenarios?
A: Our scenarios are driven by external interest and then we'll do the visual piece of that.
We have to be sure that those new scenarios are within our mission.
Q: PPE for testing and evaluation (different colored glasses)? Are eye injuries the highest risk of injuries?
A: Those glasses are Laser Eye Protection (LEP). There is a focus on protection on the eye.
The exception has been directed energy used in a testing methodology.
Q: Is the interest mostly in assessing existing technology or in stuff we are developing versus providing recommendations or design specifications?
A: We have developed emerging projects to their new approaches. We not only assess product samples that come to us for visual effects but also our basic research helps define what the requirements should be in terms of protecting against damage, etc.
