a) Immediately before joining two lengths of PVC pipe, the inside of the bell or coupling, the outside of the spigot and the elastomeric gasket shall be thoroughly cleaned to remove all foreign material.
b) End of pipe shall be beveled to allow for ease of installation. Remove burrs.
c) Lubrication of the joint and rubber gasket shall be done in accordance with the pipe manufacturer's specifications.
d) Care shall be taken that only the correct elastomeric gasket, compatible with the annular groove of the bell, is used. Insertion of the elastomeric gasket in the annular groove of the bell or coupling shall be in accordance with the manufacturer's recommendations. Pipe that is not furnished with a depth mark shall be marked before assembly to assure that the spigot end is inserted to the full depth of the joint.
e) The spigot and bell or coupling shall be aligned and pushed until the reference line on the spigot is flush with the end of the bell or coupling. Pushing shall be done in a smooth, steady motion.
2. Ductile Iron Pipe and Fittings:
a. Installation: AWWA C600.
b. Joints:
1) Mechanical: AWWA C111. Provide sufficient quantities of bolts, nuts, glands and gaskets for each socket opening on pipe and fittings.
2) Push On: Apply thin film of lubricant to gasket and place in proper position in contour of bell. Insert beveled end of joining pipe and make contact with gasket. Force beveled end of pipe to bottom of bell without displacing gasket. Do not caulk. Provide only lubricant furnished by manufacturer of pipe.
3) Flanges: AWWA C115. Install only in concrete pits. Make watertight and set not less than 150 mm (6 inches) from walls or floor.
C. Joint Restraint Harness:
328400–15
1. Install harness in the manner recommended by the manufacturer and in accordance with accepted industry practices.
3.5 INSTALLATION OF AIR AND VACUUM RELEASE VALVES
A. Air and Vacuum Release Valve (ARV) Assembly:
1. As presented in the installation details, per manufacturer’s instructions.
2. Install where indicated in the irrigation plans.
3. Plumb the valves and position vaults so that the vault does not rest on the mainline piping.
4. Install valves underground in a new polymer concrete vault with adequate room and clearance for servicing the valve per manufacturer’s specifications.
5. Replace tapping saddle or fitting as required.
6. Provide galvanized steel nipples and stainless-steel gate valve upstream of ARV valve.
7. Plumb ball valve upstream of ARV valve.
8. Plumb outlet of ARV valve with galvanized steel elbows to divert water onto side of vault or provide manufacturer’s protection top for diverting water and preventing debris from entering valve.
9. Install Flush Valve downstream, of ARV valves installed at dead ends on mainline pipe as shown on the Drawings. Final location Flush Valve to be approved by COR in the field.
3.6 INSTALLATION OF FLUSH VALVE ASSEMBLIES
A. Flush Valve Assembly:
1. As presented in the installation details consisting of a gate valve and piping to allow discharge of water and debris from mainline.
2. Install where indicated in the irrigation plans: downstream of ARV valves, and at dead ends on mainline pipe as shown on the Drawings.
3. Plumb the valves and position vaults so that the vault does not rest on the mainline piping.
4. Install ductile iron isolation valves underground with a PVC pipe shroud to prevent soil intrusion. House pipe shroud in a new polymer concrete vault with adequate room and clearance for operating the valve.
5. Provide Sch. 80 PVC Sweep Elbow with concrete thrust block immediately upstream of Flush valve outlet to prevent large debris from clogging pipe.

3.7 CONCRETE VAULT INSTALLATION
A. Install precast polymer concrete vault according to ASTM C891 and in accordance with the manufacturers printed instructions.
1. Position vaults so that the vault does not rest on the mainline piping. Set vault on bricks or concrete caps continuous under the vault to prevent shifting or settling of vault.
328400–16
2. Where unsuitable soil is found at setting elevation for the vault, remove 6-inhces minimum of unsuitable soil and replace with crushed aggregate road base compacted to 90 percent relative density per ASTM D-1557.
3. Provide filter fabric wrapped underneath and up sides of vault to prevent soil intrusion into vault.
4. Backfill vault bottom with 2 cubic feet minimum of drainage backfill.
