CMDB Definitions Term Definition

Name/Hostname The logical name assigned to a Server. On the Web, most hosts names are WWW; for example, www.Archives.gov. .ARCHIVES is the host name, and .GOV is the domain name.

Location (RM, Rack) The location in the Data Center where a rack Server is placed. Most Server rooms use a "grid" location approach, similar to a latitude and longitude grid approach for locations on Earth. The rack contains multiple mounting slots called bays, each designed to hold a hardware unit secured in place with screws. A rack Server has a low-profile enclosure, in contrast to a tower Server, which is built into an upright, standalone cabinet.

Manufacturer's Name The legal name for the designer, a manufacturer, or vendor that originated the IT product.

Such as HP, Dell, etc.

Manufacturer's Serial Number A serial number is an unique, identifying number or group of numbers and letters assigned to an individual piece of hardware or software by the manufacturer.

Manufacturer's Model # A combination of numbers, letters, and symbols assigned by a manufacturer, or vendor to identify a specific part or item of materiel.

IP Address, If any An "IP" is an "Internet Protocol" address. IP addresses must be unique. All computers that use the Internet use only these unique IP addresses to talk to each other. Names such as http:

//www.yahoo.com are just for human convenience and are never used for computer communication. Computers use Domain Name Service (DNS) to turn the names humans understand into IP addresses computers understand. That is, they turn "www.yahoo.com" into "216.109.118.79". When you connect to Yahoo.com, your computer communicates with "216.109.118.79", not "www.yahoo.com". IP addresses are assigned by NARA IT Operations.

NARA Asset Number An inventory asset tag number is assigned to all NARA computers and devices for the purpose of tracking equipment within the agency. The asset tag number is helpful when you contact the Helpdesk to report a problem with a computer or device. The Asset Number is assigned by the NARA Asset Management Team.
