About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document for an RFQ regarding a vacuum-jacketed flexible hose assembly for gaseous hydrogen application in NASA's NTREES gas system upgrade at Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC).
The hose assembly must be approximately 60 feet long with a ½-inch outside diameter, 0.083-inch wall thickness for the working fluid, and a 1-1/2" schedule 40 pipe outer jacket. The assembly requires ½-inch AN fittings (per AS5202-08 standard) to integrate with existing NTREES infrastructure, a maximum working pressure of 1100 psig, vacuum jacket capability for low-temperature maintenance, and compliance with ASME B31.12/B31.3 hydrogen compatibility standards. Materials must include 316L stainless steel process tubing, 304 stainless steel braid/armor, Monel internal cable, and brass shutoff components, with all selections dependent on sizing and material compatibility verification. NASA rejected alternative configurations including non-vacuum-jacketed solutions, two connected 30-foot assemblies, and FNPT connections. Testing and certification requirements include pressure certification, leak detection testing, and vacuum leak rate documentation with proceeding callouts performed by the contractor. The installation and delivery location is MSFC Building 4205 Lab Room 101, with shipment directed to 4631 Saturn Road, MSFC Central Receiving, Huntsville, AL 35812. When conflicting specifications exist across the SOW, isometric drawing, and route sketch, the government-furnished isometric drawing serves as primary control, followed by the route sketch for spatial constraints, with the SOW providing general requirements and performance criteria.

RFQ QUESTIONS
1. Is the vacuum jacket mandatory, or would NASA consider a non-vacuum-jacketed flexible metallic hose solution for this gaseous hydrogen application?
a. Vacuum jacket is mandatory for our buildup of the NTREES gas system upgrade as it will be used for maintaining low temperatures.
2. Would NASA accept two approximately 30-foot hose assemblies connected by an intermediate hydrogen-rated union to provide the required approximately 60-foot run?
a. This would not be an appropriate adjustment as it will severely impact our integration into the current infrastructure.
3. Would 1/2-inch FNPT connections be acceptable, or must the assembly use the specified 1/2-inch AN / AS5202-08 connections?
a. AN/AS5202-08 fittings are preferred, as this will be connected to current infrastructure that NTREES systems utilize. Likewise, will mitigate the number of fittings needed for the system by reducing the amount of potential leak points.
4. Would the proposed materials, including 316L stainless steel process tubing, 304 stainless steel braid/armor, Monel internal cable, and brass shutoff components, be acceptable for this application?
a. This will be dependent on the sizing of the material as the system will be needed to tolerate a MEWP of 1100-psig, materials compatibility of low operating temperatures, current capabilities for integrating the components into the current NTREES system, etc.
5. Must the complete flexible hose assembly demonstrate suitability across the full specified 80 K to 320 K temperature range?
a. N/A
6. Please also confirm the applicable ASME B31.12 and/or ASME B31.3 requirements, including any required testing and documentation, for a flexible hose alternative.
a. This will need to conform the ASME B31.12/31.3 as per hydrogen compatibility.
7. End Connections: The SOW specifies ½-inch A/N fittings, while the isometric states either ½-inch AN fitting or AS5202-08. Please confirm which is required.
a. This is AN ½-inch fitting; AS5202-08 is the proper (standard that we refer to replacing the prior MS33649) -08 is the designation of size based on the 1/16-inch scale.
8. Dimensions/Tolerances: Please confirm the required ½-inch inside bore, drawing dimension units/tolerances, and which document controls if the SOW, isometric, and route sketch differ.
a. This will be a ½-inch O.D. likewise, will need to accommodate a 0.083-inch wall thickness for the working fluid. Whereas the outer jacket will be 1-1/2” schedule 40 pipe.
b. Document Control: If the SOW, isometric drawing, and route sketch contain conflicting dimensions or tolerances, the following hierarchy applies:
i. Government-furnished isometric drawing (primary control).
ii. Government-furnished route sketch (secondary control for routing and spatial constraints).
iii. SOW and Item Specification (general requirements and performance criteria).
If conflicts exist, the contractor shall identify them in writing and request clarification before fabrication.
9. Codes/Testing: Please confirm whether NASA requires a specific edition of ASME
B31.12/B31.3 or specific pressure/leak-test criteria, vacuum-retention duration, NDE coverage, or cleanliness requirements beyond those stated in the SOW. The SOW currently asks the contractor to propose these criteria.
a. Pressure certification, leak detection, and vacuum leak rates shall be provided. Proceeding callouts will be performed via the contractor.
10. Location: The SOW identifies Building 4631 as the delivery location, while the isometric identifies Building 4205. Please confirm the installation location and ship-to address.
a. The installation and delivery location will be MSFC Building 4205 Lab Room
101. Shipment location will be 4631 Saturn Rd. MSFC Central Receiving Huntsville, AL 35812
