About this file
This is a Questions and Answers document addressing contractor concerns regarding manufacturing tolerances for a federal contract involving structural fabrication.
The document addresses three primary tolerance-related inquiries. First, regarding drilled holes for plate and structural placements specified at 1/64" or 0.010", the government confirms this tolerance must be maintained when required by drawings but expresses openness to relaxing requirements on a case-by-case basis, requesting contractors to submit specific drawing numbers where tolerance relaxation is feasible. Second, concerning hole diameter tolerances, the government clarifies that the referenced tolerance is -0.001" to +0.006" for certain holes and requests clarification on any 0.0007" tolerance cited, as this may represent a typographical error, with contractors asked to provide drawing numbers for verification. Third, for structural member tolerances referencing ASTM channel dimensions, the government confirms concurrence with the contractor's approach of purchasing standard ASTM structural members and utilizing them as-is, eliminating the need for custom modifications to meet non-standard tolerances.

Questions and Answers
1. Drilled Holes: We are noticing a very high tolerance (1/64” or 0.010”) for the plate and structural hole placements.
a. ANS: We request this tolerance to be kept when required by the drawing, but we are open to relaxing this requirement on a case by case basis. Please provide drawing numbers where you believe the tolerances can be relaxed.
2. Hole Diameters: Hole diameters with even higher tolerances 1/128” or 0.0007”)
a. ANS: We assume that you might be referring to the tolerance of -0.001” to +0.006” for some holes. We don’t recall a 0.0007” tolerance. This might be a typo. Please provide the drawing number(s) where this tolerance was called out.
3. Structural Member Tolerance: Drawings also reference ASTM channel dimensions. We would purchase standard ASTM structural members and use as-is.
a. ANS: We concur.
