About this file

This document is a Questions and Answers file related to a NASA HVAC unit replacement project (Solicitation 80NSSC25892917Q). The Q&A addresses technical specifications for a Bard AC unit replacement, including key clarifications about equipment dimensions, refrigerant type, and heating requirements. Specific details include: the new unit will be slightly larger (growing from 22" to 25" depth, and 85" to 93" in height), will use R-454B refrigerant instead of the obsolete R-410A, and will have a heat pump system providing approximately 15kW of heat without additional electric resistance heating. The replacement unit is a 5.0-6.0 ton air conditioner and heat pump, with electrical panel repositioning and matching existing framing and duct openings. The solicitation is issued by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Shared Services Center, and vendors will need the existing Bard model and serial number to provide an exact replacement quote.

Ques ons and Answers

1. Can you confirm if a li gate is needed for delivery? Yes, a li gate will be needed.

2. The exis ng unit that went down was said to be a bard, so the new unit will match framing aspects, However, depending on the age of the downed unit, the new unit may have a larger condenser coil growing from ~85” to ~93” in height. This added height will be to the bo om of the unit. The new unit will also grow from 22” in depth off the wall to 25” depth. With the electrical panel moving from the right-hand side to the front of the unit. See a ached spec sheet.

Again, the framing and duct openings all match.

The objec ve also states to use the same controls, do you have any informa on on what controls are currently? Please refer to HVAC Slide a achment for details.

3. In order to provide a quote on the proper unit where the replacement is an exact or close to match, I will need the exis ng Bard model number and serial number. Please refer to HVAC Slide a achment for details.

4. The dimensions remain the same, but I’d like to clarify the 10kW hea ng requirement since it deviates from the ini al statement of work, which specified “No Electric Heat.”

The unit I’ve quoted is a 5.0 Ton Air Condi oner and Heat Pump. At 50ºF, this system would produce approximately 15kW of heat. Is this what you were referring to, or would you like to add a 10kW electric resis ve backup heater to the heat pump?

Addi onally, regarding the specified R-410A refrigerant, please note that it is now obsolete.

Bard exclusively uses R-454B refrigerant in all of its units, so we are unable to provide a system with R-410A.

Let me know how you’d like to proceed

The heat pump heat is sufficient, no electric resis ve back up hea ng is required.

R410 refrigerant is not required.

5. Specs are calling for a 10 kw. This (now 6 ton) will have a MCA of 61 and an MOCP of 70. This will probably be over the 12.2 Kw requirement. Can’t say exactly what the Kw would be without knowing the site voltage though.

Unit looks to have been upsized to a 6 ton instead of a 5 ton, this will cause a change.

Specs say unit shall be rated at 51,500btu at 130. Units are not rated or tested at 130 degrees (125 max tes ng) BTU’s can also not be determined without addi onal informa on specifically room return air temp.

Refrigerant R410 is not manufactured any longer refrigerant will be R454B.

The heat pump heat is sufficient, no electric resis ve back up hea ng is required.

R410 refrigerant is not required.
