vi. Wheels shall be aluminum.
vii. Vaporizer shall have forward cover to prevent damage from road debris.
viii. All tanker trailers shall have a grounding reel.
c. Inner Vessel
i. Inner vessel shall contain three baffles to minimize liquid movement while the tanker trailer is in motion. Baffles shall not interfere with loading or offloading operations.
d. Outer Shell
i. Outer shell shall be A36 carbon steel with exception of the rear head. The rear head shall be 304 stainless steel.
ii. Multi-layered insulation shall be used in the annular space.
iii. Annular space shall be kept at a vacuum of no greater than 5 microns of mercury.
iv. Manhole shall be welded.
e. Piping, Valves, and Instrumentation
i. The tanker trailers shall have a primary liquid gauging device in accordance with 49 CFR 178.338-14(a) (1). The primary liquid gauging device used for filling shall be a dip-tube, trycock, or differential pressure gauge.
1. If the primary filling device cannot provide the liquid level, the tanker trailer shall have a secondary liquid level indicator installed to indicate the liquid level within the inner tank.
2. The tanker trailer must be equipped with the capability of indicating maximum fill level for LN2 and LO2. This indication must take into account weight of the lading, ullage space required, and tare weight of the tanker trailer. Assume 16,000 pounds for a tractor and a maximum gross weight of 80,000 pounds.
ii. Bottom and top fill and discharge connection shall be 3-inch CGA connections in accordance with CGA V-6 Standard Bulk Refrigerated Liquid Transfer Connections.
iii. Top and bottom fill and discharge connections shall be removable to allow the tanker trailer to change service between LN2 and LO2.
iv. The vaporizer shall be an ambient air vaporizer capable of maintaining 50 psig ullage pressure during sustained offloading operations.
v. Each tanker trailer shall have at least two pressure gauges. The pressure gauges shall be easily read by the operator during normal operation.
1. One gauge shall indicate inner vessel pressure.
2. One gauge shall indicate bottom fill/discharge line pressure.
vi. All external connections shall be fitted with a dust cap for when not in use.
vii. Sample port connection shall be SAE AS4309 3/8”.
viii. The following manufacturers are permitted for valves: Herose, Bestobell, RegO, Generant, Hoke, Rockwood, or Hy-Lok.
ix. Gauging devices shall have calibration port available to calibrate the device in place.
f. Piping Cabinet
i. The cabinet containing all or the majority of external piping, valves, etc.
shall be located at the rear of the tanker trailer.
ii. The cabinet shall have two doors that swing outward when opened.
iii. The cabinet doors shall have a mechanism to hold doors in the open position.
iv. Piping schematic, flow diagram, and liquid level conversion charts shall be provided on the inside of one of the cabinet doors. The charts must be easily readable by the operator during normal operations. The charts must not be easily susceptible to corrosion, fading, or other ambient deterioration.
v. The cabinet shall contain a document holder, which shall be easily accessible by the operator.
vi. The piping cabinet shall have the ability to be locked by a standard padlock when closed.
vii. All tanker trailers shall have a transfer hose tube. The hose tube shall be located street-side. The hose tube shall be constructed of PVC, with the exception of the compartment door and door mechanism, which shall be aluminum. Hose tube shall be large enough to accommodate a 15’ hose with 3” CGA connections. The compartment door for the hose tube shall either have the ability to be locked with a standard padlock or located within the piping cabinet.
g. Protective Coating
i. General
1. All carbon steel, aluminum, and stainless steel surfaces shall be coated except for the following: wheels, piping/tubing, valves, hardware (made from non-corrosive materials), or components provided by a manufacturer that already have corrosion protection.
2. If coating of an area or component is difficult or impossible after installation, that area or component shall be coated prior to installation.
3. All faying surfaces with an opening less than ¼” shall be sealed with polysulfide sealant.
4. The contractor shall follow coating manufacturer’s recommendations for surface preparation, application, environmental controls, and curing.
5. Inorganic zinc primer shall have a dried film thickness (DFT) of
2.5 to 4.0 mils. Thicker build-up may occur in areas limited to one square foot or less. The proper DFT shall be obtained in a single application, which may consist of multiple passes provided the coating is still wet. DFT of the topcoat shall be sufficient to ensure uniform coverage and color. Epoxy coatings shall be applied to coating manufacturer’s recommendations.
6. All coating finishes shall be free of runs, drips, ridges, waves, laps, brush marks, sags, blisters, bubbles, mudcracking, variations in color, gloss or texture, missed areas, excessive or insufficient film build-up, foreign contaminants, or dry over spray.
7. Top coats shall be colored in accordance with AMS-STD-595 White, No. 17925.
ii. Carbon Steel
1. All carbon steel surfaces shall be coated with a three-coat system.
First coat is an inorganic zinc primer, second coat is an inhibited polyamide epoxy midcoat and the topcoat is aliphatic polyurethane topcoat. Approved products are listed in Appendix B of NASA-
STD-5008B.
iii. Aluminum and Stainless Steel
