About this file

This document contains questions and answers related to a solicitation for a Phase A study of a GEO-XO Lightning Mapper instrument. The study is being conducted by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration Goddard Space Flight Center to develop a definition-phase study for a new GEO-XO Lightning Mapper that will provide operational lightning data to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and other agencies. The questions clarify requirements for the instrument's detection efficiency averaged over pixels, handling of anomalous pixels, and the need to potentially update the analog-to-digital converter's effective number of bits based on upcoming trade study results. The solicitation seeks proposals for the Phase A study, with the instrument intended to fly on NOAA's planned series of GEO-XO satellites beginning with a 2032 launch.

GeoXO Lightning Mapper Phase A Study RFP Questions and Answers #2

Question 1- Reference LMXPORD 153- Does the exclusion of electronics unit/power supplies from the allowance to use single string design in the referenced PORD section imply a requirement for electronics unit and power supplies to be block redundant?

Answer to Question 1- Block redundant electronics unit and power supplies could be one implementation.

Question 2- Reference LMXPORD120- Is the intent of this requirement that the average detection efficiency, averaged over 24 hours, be greater than 70% for every pixel in the full disk? Please clarify if there are allowances for defective pixels, or if the requirement should be averaged over a to be specified portion of the FOV.

Answer to Question 2- Average over full FOV. Phase A trade study should provide information on handling of anomalous pixels and other detector defects per CDRL 5.

Question 3- Reference LMXPORD128 and LMXPORD127 - Please clarify if there are allowances for defective pixels, or if the requirement should be averaged over a to be specified portion of the FOV.

Answer to Question 3 - Average over full FOV. Phase A trade study should provide information on handling of anomalous pixels and other detector defects per CDRL 5.

Question 4- Reference LMXPORD145 - Could a TBR be added to this requirement pending the completion of the ADC ENOB trade 2.1.1, LMXSOW20?

Answer to Question 4- The trade study results will inform the need to change

LMXPORD145 value for phase B.
