About this file

This is an Attachment containing acoustical improvement drawings and material examples for the Bass Concert Hall at the University of Texas at Austin, which is part of a larger audio renovation project for Bass Concert Hall and McCullough Theater. The document outlines nine treatment areas where acoustical issues have been identified and provides proposed mitigation strategies using sound-absorbing materials. The primary issues involve hard wall finishes and wood slats that create echoes returning to the stage and main floor seating from the main loudspeaker arrays and stage-originated sounds. Proposed solutions include installing 2-inch thick felt/PET sound-absorbing panels (such as unikavaev Ecoustic) over hard walls in niche corners, over the in-house audio mix booth wall, and over the house rear wall wood slats. Additional treatments include installing 4-inch thick lapendary panels above catwalks at 6-10 feet below the roof deck and adjusting drapery positions to their physical limit stops. The proposal specifications require sketches and approximate square footages with breakout prices by treatment area to allow for partial awards, equivalent materials to the basis of design, and estimated work days required to complete each treatment area, with work coordinated around the event schedule during dark periods between events.

The document includes detailed product specifications for two primary material systems: Ecoustic panels available in multiple thicknesses (0.31 inches to 1.97 inches) with 38 color options, featuring 100% PET composition with up to 80% recycled content, and lapendary panels ranging from 1 to 4 inches thick in standard 4-foot widths up to 40 feet in length with various finish options including PVC film and sailcloth wrapping. Both material types meet Class A fire ratings per ASTM standards and offer environmental compliance including Cal Title 01350 compliance, Low-VOC certification, and contribution to LEED and Green Star building standards. The lapendary panels are designed for suspension using anodized aluminum stiffener bars and cable systems with minimum 8-foot clearance above catwalks, while Ecoustic panels feature natural anodized aluminum edging and universal trim options. Material selection requires coordination with the owner prior to procurement, and all work must include necessary means of access with consideration for installation during scheduled dark periods between events.

Lapendary® Panels are large, unique acoustical banners hung in a loose catenary fashion or installed flush to the roof deck for a flat appearance with minimum festoon. The original Lapendary Panel was developed in 1987 by MBI in response to the growing demand for proper acoustics in today’s larger indoor venues. Arenas and other multi-purpose facilities require a sound environment conducive to both athletic events and musical performances.

Lapendary Panels reduce reverberation time and sound intensity levels in harsh acoustical environments. This results in increased speech intelligibility, better communication and improved quality of sound systems, allowing your venue to become a multi-functional space.

The effectiveness and success of the Lapendary Panel can be seen in any of the 120+ arenas that chose world class acoustics from MBI Products Company.

• Store products in a cool, dry and temperature controlled interior location not less than 40°F prior to, during and after installation.

• Store products out of direct UV sunlight.

• Store and protect products from the elements and from damage.

• Due to the nature of this product, some wrinkling and puckering is common and unavoidable.

• Field cutting is not recommended, but possible with instructions from manufacturer.

• Sailcloth is not recommended for high humidity or high UV areas.

• Suspension hardware is not to be pre-installed.

• Do not subject acoustical products to critical edge lighting without first consulting manufacturer.

• Before installing Lapendary panels, please request copies of installation drawings and details.

• Refer to “Keeping and Maintaining Your Lapendary Panels”

Caution: Lapendary® Panels require custom engineering since every interior space is different. Please consult MBI for assistance when specifying Lapendary® Panels.

Lapendary® Panels are made from an inherently soft fiberglass core so some transverse wrinkling in the PVC finish is common and unavoidable.
