About this file

This Technical Specification Report details equipment requirements for the Bass Concert Hall and McCullough Theatre Audio Renovation project at The University of Texas at Austin in Austin, Texas. The project specifies the procurement and installation of four CM Lodestar Classic Model L hoists, each with a 1-ton capacity and 16 feet-per-minute operating speed, configured for inverted installation in the venue's audio grid. The hoists are engineered for permanent integration into the existing infrastructure with 50 feet of lift capacity, featuring black phosphate load chain and swivel hooks with heavy-duty safety latches designed for compatibility with existing spare parts and maintenance protocols. Critical operational parameters include 44 feet 3 inches of vertical clearance from beam to stage deck, with upper and lower limit switches calibrated to maintain 6-inch safety buffers from both the grid grate and stage floor. The equipment must be delivered and installed by July 1, 2026.

The electrical specifications require 208-volt, 3-phase, 60-hertz power with low-voltage 115-volt control via NEMA L16-20P and L14-20P Hubbell connectors. Safety features are mandatory and include dual DC braking systems designed for redundant protection during overhead suspension of audio equipment over public areas, with factory calibration required for all limit switches and grated protection systems. The hoists must include heavy-duty two-point suspension fabric chain bags with upgrades to dual-point attachment systems for inverted operation to ensure vertical stability and prevent chain-stacking complications within the restricted grid clearance. No substitutions for alternative brands or next-generation models are permitted, as 100 percent fleet compatibility with existing house spare parts and established annual maintenance protocols is a strict requirement of the specification.

Technical Specification Report: Dedicated PA Hoists Project: Bass Concert Hall and McCullough Theatre Audio Renovation Venue: Bass Concert Hall, Austin, TX Entity: The University of Texas at Austin (Texas Performing Arts) Referenced Vendor: Mountain Productions, Inc.

In-Building Deadline: July 1, 2026

1. Equipment Identification To maintain 100% compatibility with existing house spare parts and established annual maintenance protocols, the following model is strictly specified. No substitutions for "Next Gen" or alternative brands will be accepted.

• Make/Model: CM Lodestar Classic – Model L

• Quantity: Four (4) Units

• Capacity: 1-Ton (2,000 lbs)

• Operating Speed: 16 FPM (Feet Per Minute)

• Frame Size: Large Frame

• Fleet Compatibility: Required for 100% interoperability with existing house spare parts and service protocols.

2. Operational & Rigging Configuration

• Orientation: Inverted (Motor-Up). Configured for permanent installation in the AP

Grid.

• Vertical Clearance: 44' 3" (Bottom of Beam to Stage Deck).

• Specified Lift: 50 Feet of Lift. (Includes a 5' 9" safety buffer for the chain "dead end").

• Chain Type: Black Phosphate Load Chain (5/16"). Specified for low visibility/stealth in the grid.

• Top/Bottom Hooks: Swivel Hooks with Heavy-Duty Safety Latches.

o Interface: Must have a minimum throat opening of 1.06 inches to accept a 5/8" Screw-Pin Shackle.

o Compatibility: Interface with welded pad eyes, production beam clamps, and 3/8" x 5' wire rope baskets.

3. Electrical & Control Specifications

• Power: 208V / 3-Phase / 60Hz.

• Control: Low-Voltage Control (115V Control Transformer).

• Connectors (Double Hubbell / Dual Twist-Lock):

o Power: NEMA L16-20P (4-pole, 4-wire, 20A, 3-Phase). Ref: Hubbell HBL2431.

o Control: NEMA L14-20P (3-pole, 4-wire, 20A). Ref: Hubbell HBL2411.

4. Specialized Safety & "Grate Protection" Limits To prevent damage to the venue's subway grate and structural steel from operator error, the following factory settings are mandatory:

• Braking System: Double DC Brakes. Mandatory for redundant safety during overhead suspension of audio arrays over public areas.

• Upper Limit Calibration: Vendor must factory-calibrate the Upper Geared Limit Switch to stop hook travel 6 inches below the grid/subway grate.

• Lower Limit Calibration: Geared limit switch set to stop the hook 6 inches off the stage deck (approx. 43' 9" of travel) to prevent hook impact with the floor.

• Chain Container: Heavy-Duty Two-Point Suspension Fabric Chain Bag.

o Requirement: If not provided as standard, the unit must be upgraded to a two-point attachment system. This is mandatory for inverted operation to ensure vertical stability of the container and prevent chain-stacking jams within the restricted AP grid clearance.
