The colony is to be genetically defined and monitored for disease status and genetic purity. Responses are due no later than February 28, 2022. The amendment provides responses to questions submitted, clarifying health screening requirements, strain information, and colony age ranges. RESPONSES TO QUESTIONS
1. Question: Can we use existing in-house strains or are the Charles River
Laboratories (CRL) models required for rederivation?
1. Response: The stock strains are re-derived from the Jackson Labs to maintain the genetic integrity of the resource. They are C57BL/6J (000664 – http://jaxmice.jax.org/strain/000664.html) and BALB/cBy (001026 – http://jaxmice.jax.org/strain/001026.html).
2. Question: Would the rooms in a barrier need to be dedicated exclusive for each strain or to your agency?
2. Response: Each barrier room must be dedicated to the National Institute on Aging (NIA) colony and can hold multiple strains.
3. Question: Would the government be willing to contribute to a new barrier for this acquisition?
3. Response: The approach, including the cost of adding a barrier room to the offeror’s facility with the goal of holding the contract’s animals should be included in the proposal.
4. Question: Health status was not defined. Could the government please define an exclusion list beyond Specific Pathogen Free (SPF)?
4. Response: The specifics of the health screening conducted for the NIA aged rodent colonies are captured in the health reports available at https://www.criver.com/products-services/research-models-services/health-reports/north-america/nia-health-reports-species?region=3611
5. Question: Could the government provide estimated age ranges or weights for the sake of aging the colonies?
5. Response: 0-32 months of age.
