Korpela to Wakefield Stateline Grade Extension Culvert & Bridge Replacement – Technical Specifications
This document comprises the technical specifications for a Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT) and Department of Natural Resources (DNMB) culvert and bridge replacement project located along the Korpela to Wakefield Stateline Grade Extension (Project No. 7136-20-0010, File #751/20089.JBB). The project encompasses multiple construction divisions including cast-in-place concrete, precast structural concrete, structural steel framing, rough carpentry, site clearing, earth moving, erosion and sedimentation controls, geosynthetic reinforced soil abutments, turf and grasses, and storm utility drainage piping. The specifications detail comprehensive requirements for materials, fabrication, quality assurance testing, field quality control procedures, and execution standards. Key submittals include product data, design mixtures, shop drawings, material certifications, test reports, and pre-construction documentation. The project requires compliance with 2012 MDOT Standard Specifications for Construction, ACI standards for concrete work, AISC standards for structural steel, AWS standards for welding, and various ASTM testing methodologies. Quality assurance protocols mandate third-party testing agency involvement, material certifications, compaction verification, and structural inspections throughout construction phases.
The specifications establish rigorous performance requirements across all work phases, including minimum concrete compressive strengths ranging from 4,000 psi to 4,500 psi at 28 days, reinforcement material standards (ASTM A 615/A 706M), structural steel specifications (ASTM A 588/A 847M), and specialized requirements for precast elements, geosynthetic reinforced soil components, and erosion control measures. Field quality control requires density testing at specified frequencies, slump and air content verification for concrete, compression cylinder testing, and visual inspection of welds and bolted connections. The project includes specific equipment and procedural standards for handling, transportation, storage, and installation of all components, with emphasis on preventing damage and maintaining structural integrity. Documentation requirements include submittal logs, material test reports, source quality-control reports, field quality-control reports, and final inspection records. The contract incorporates standards for cold and hot weather placement conditions, dewatering procedures, and protection of completed work during subsequent construction operations.
