565.20 Materials—Flowable fill shall be used for filling abandoned AC waterline. Flowable fill shall be controlled low-strength material consisting of a fluid mixture of cement, fly ash, aggregate, water and admixtures necessary to provide workable properties. Long-term hardened strength shall be minimum 75 psi to maximum 150 psi at 56 days. Flowable fill shall be non-shrink and self-leveling.
The material for flowable fill shall be combined of the following constituents:
Item Volume (cu. yd.)
Cement (min) 0.010
Fly Ash 0.158
Sand 0.562
Water 0.320
Total 1.050*
*Note that one cubic yard of flowable fill produces more than one cubic yard due to the additional water mix water.
Alternative flowable fill mix designs may be approved by the Engineer.

MK/TF:G:\GROUP\ENGINEERING\ADMIN\TEMPLATES\PROJECTS\CONTRACTS\AD BID AWARD\MRG-ADDENDUM.DOCX V.04/10/2015
565.40 General—This subsection includes construction sequencing necessary to abandon AC waterline by filling with flowable fill.
565.41 Preparation—Contractor shall notify the Engineer at least 24 hours prior to filling mains.
The filling of abandoned waterline shall occur after full commissioning of the new ductile iron waterline and City Forces have performed all abandonment activities associated with post-connection work. Mains shall not be filled until Contractor verifies existing abandoned services have been kinked or plugged during customer service reconnection.
565.42 Placement—Fill abandon lines by completely filling pipe and any annular void space with flowable fill. Use concrete or grout pumps capable of continuous delivery at planned placement rate. Select fill placement equipment and follow procedure with sufficient safety and care to avoid damage to existing underground utilities and structures. Operate equipment at pressure that will not distort or imperil any portion of work, new, or existing. Have filling operations performed by experienced crews with equipment to monitor density of flowable fill and to control pressure.
Clean placement areas of debris that may hinder fill placement. Remove excessive amounts of sludge and other substances that may degrade performance of fill. Remove free water prior to starting fill placement.
Fill existing AC waterline where shown in plans, where existing AC waterline will be cut and removed, per Section 560, and at locations where AC pipe is encountered during construction activities. These removed sections of pipe may be additional allowable locations for inserting flowable fill.
During placement of flowable fill, compensate for irregularities in pipe, such as obstructions, or broken pipe to ensure no voids remain unfilled. Continuously pump flowable fill into pipe until line is filled end to end.
Place flowable fill under pressure conditions until flowable fill emerges from vent pipes or end of pipe. Pump flowable fill with sufficient pressure to overcome friction to fill pipe from end to end.
565.43 Quality Control—Check flow characteristics and workability of the fill as placement proceeds. Remediate placement of flowable fill which does not fill voids in the pipe, or where voids develop due to excessive shrinkage or bleeding of fill, by using pressure grouting from inside pipe or surface.
560.80 Flowable Fill—The quantities of Flowable Fill accepted will be measured by the linear foot basis as determined by straight line distance between the beginning and end of the pipe being filled.
