AMENDMENT 0005

QUESTION NO. 20: Work Item D-053, Rudder & Rudder Stock, Remove, Inspect, paragraph 3.10 – 3.10.4, 3.12.4 – 3.12.4.2;

i. Is it the Coast Guards intent to replace the Port and Starboard rudder lower bearings with the GFP Thordon Bearings in paragraphs 3.10-3.10.4 or reuse the old lower bearings if clearances are still within tolerances?

ii. Is the Contractor to assume that the (2) new GFP lower Thordon Bearings have been already machined to the proper dimensions and are ready to be installed without any machining needed by the Contractor?

iii In paragraphs 3.12.4 through 3.12.4.2, that checking the blue fit of the palm bolts to the rudder & stock palm bolt holes to a 90% contact fit is unusual. That normally the Contractor would measure the bodies of the bolts and the palm bolt hole diameters on the palms and determine how the bolts fit into palm holes considering these bolts are to be straight bodies and the palm holes are to be straight bore diameters. Would measuring bolt diameters and palm hole diameters be acceptable instead of checking the blue fit of bolts to palm bolt holes?

ANSWER: i. The Coast Guard intends to renew the Port and Starboard lower bearings with GFP Thordon bearings.

ii. The GFP Thordon bearings should not require machining.

iii. A blue fit is required.
