About this file

This document is a detailed barometer specification for the National Data Buoy Center's (NDBC) SCOOP system. The specification outlines technical requirements for barometers to be used on next-generation buoy systems, with deployment ranges from Alaska to the equator. NDBC has previously certified two specific barometer models: the R.M. Young model 61302V-1 (certified in late 2015) and the Setra model 278 (certified in late fiscal year 2017).

The specification provides comprehensive electrical and physical requirements, including an input voltage range of 10-16 VDC, pressure range of 800-1100 hPa, accuracy of +/- 0.75 hPa over -20°C to +45°C, operational temperature of -40°C to +60°C, and physical dimensions of 3.6" x 2.4" x 1.0" weighing less than 5 oz. The document explicitly states that NDBC will accept the R.M. Young 61302V-1, Setra 2781800MA1B2BZZNDB2, or an equivalent barometer that meets all specified technical parameters.

NDBC’s SCOOP System

Barometer Specification

The National Data Buoy’s SCOOP system barometer is intended to be used on the NDBC’s next generation buoy system as an extended (redundant) meteorological instrument. This barometer is installed in the CAMETPLD housing and has limited space for the installation and must have low input power requirements. This barometer must also maintain its accuracy over a wide range of temperatures as the SCOOP systems are design to be deployed as far as Alaska and as far South as the equator. The SCOOP barometer must undergo and pass NDBC laboratory testing to verify its performance characteristics and then pass field testing to ensure it can with stand installation on a constantly moving platform.

The NDBC first certified the R.M. Young model 61302V-1 for operational use in the SCOOP system in late

2015. In fiscal year 2017 the NDBC worked with Setra to make slight modifications to their model 278 barometer to get it to meet the NDBC SCOOP Requirements. The model 278 barometer was certified for use in the SCOOP system in late fiscal year 2017.

The NDBC uses the R.M. Young 61302V-1 or the Setra 2781800MA1B2BZZNDB2 or an equal that meets the following requirements:
