Queson and Answer
Geotech Drilling – CA FLAP SR89(3) Lassen Peak August 1, 2024
Received: July 28, 2024 Question Answer
1. Question regarding the locations of the borings.
Will they be on one side of the roadway?
Or say nine on the north bound and nine on the south bound.
This affects the time to move the traffic control devices which will affect the time frame to complete the drilling.
This information is necessary to obtain a cost from the firm who will be performing the traffic control and prepare the traffic plan.
The road will be drilled at 0.30-mile increments with the borings alternating between the two drive lanes.
2. The scope of work states 18 drilling locations, but the text says 10 five-gallon buckets. Does that supposed to be 18 five-gallon buckets?
We need 10 five-gallon buckets. Subgrade samples will not be collected for every boring.
3. Our drill rig is equipped with 6” auger. Is there an issue with 6” augers. It does not affect the drilling or sampling.
A 6” auger may be used instead of an 8” auger.
4. Is there a cost estimate, budget or ballpark figure for the project listed?
We do not provide cost estimates for simplified acquisitions.
5. Is there an actual start date for the project?
There is no official start date. Work will be accomplished either in September or October.
6. This is a new requirement

7. Are we submitting the plan to Caltrans and wait for their approval or use one of their standard traffic control plans that applies to the site work?
FHWA-CFL will be obtaining the encroachment permit for the drilling. The traffic control plans will be part of the encroachment permit application. If Caltrans accepts the Caltrans standard traffic control plans for the permit, then these standard plans will be adequate. If Caltrans requires a project specific traffic control plans for the permit, then the driller will need to provide a project specific traffic control plans.
