About this file
This document is a technical design specification for a Class I Lightning Protection System installation at University Mountain, prepared by Technical Evaluation and Development Services, LLC for the U.S. Department of Agriculture Forest Service in Montana, dated January 13, 2026.
The system design employs a rolling sphere model approach to protect the facility and includes the following key components and specifications: one 5/8-inch diameter, 48-inch long tinned copper air terminal (Harger 5848CUATT or equivalent) mounted on a 2-inch Schedule 80 galvanized pipe mast extending 15 feet above the tower; 140 linear feet of Class I main-sized tinned copper conductor with 80,000 circular mil cross-sectional area (Harger 32T or equivalent) routed down the tower leg to the grounding electrode system; a 12-inch by 4-inch by 1/4-inch tinned copper ground bus bar with insulators and brackets; and guy wire grounding using 1/0 AWG bare stranded tinned copper conductors with exothermic welds. The bill of materials specifies 20 tin-plated bronze pipe clamps (Harger CPC1.5/2TP or equivalent), six stainless steel parallel guy wire clamps (Harger SSC25/875 or equivalent), 30 RF cable ground kits, one exothermic mold and ten units of exothermic weld metal. All bonding and grounding connections must utilize UL 467-listed components, with conductors fastened to the tower leg in 36-inch increments using pipe clamps and protected with non-metallic liquid-tight conduit where applicable. The design establishes a defined zone of protection around the tower structure and associated antennas.
