About this file
This is a Q&A document addressing technical specifications for replacing control room doors at an FAA facility. The document clarifies requirements for a double-door installation project, including details about the access control system (HID card readers), ceiling specifications (1 inch taller than door frame), and security components.
Key specifications include: traditional badge read followed by manual door opening (no automatic opener), 90-minute fire-rated doors required, steel-stiffened core doors to prevent flexing, standard 6x20 inch vision glass (non-bullet resistant), and reuse of existing hollow steel frames and IDS/DPS components. The facility will use existing access control system hardware, with no new programming required. No video management system or surveillance systems are needed. All products must be American-made and meet required specifications. Contractor is responsible for taking door frame measurements. Paint codes are pending facility response, and coordination should be facilitated through the ARTCC POC.

JCN 24005106 - Replace Control Room Doors
FAQ
1. Ceiling Information:
o Is the ceiling on the secure side a drop ceiling? Immediately adjacent to the door it is a framed in with wood or metal studs with sheetrock over it.
o o How high is the ceiling on the secure side? 1 inch taller than the door frame for approximately 1 foot beyond door threshold o
2. Access Control System:
o What is the current access control system make and model? Pending response from vendor which services the ACS. Facility only needs the door and applicable hardware to function with the system. The panic bar, etc must be compatible with the existing ACS.
o
3. Video Management System (VMS):
o What is the current video management system? Alternatively, are we expected to provide a new system? There is no VMS associated with these doors.
o
4. Physical Access Control System (PACS):
o Can you provide more specifics about the PACS? For example, does it involve just a cypher lock on the active door itself? Panic bar on the inside. No motion sensor. There are no cypher locks on these doors. Key Card entry and/or override key for emergencies.
o
5. Paint Codes:
o Does the maintenance team have the paint codes for the doors? Pending facility response.
o
6. IDS/DPS:
o Will the IDS/DPS on the frames remain and be reused? Yes, they will remain and be reused.
o o
7. Video Surveillance Systems/ECV:
o What specific systems are required for the VSS/ECV? None
1. Dimensions of the Door Frame Opening:
o Please provide the exact measurements of the door frame openings, including height, width, and depth, for both double-door installations. This is the responsibility of the contractor.
1. What is the brand and model of the existing ACS system? Pending vendor response
2. What brand are the current card readers? Brand = HID;
3. Does the FAA desire for us to match existing readers? No. Facility will use what is currently in place.
4. What access control credentials are being utilized? Not Applicable. FOUO
5. What is the intended SOO for the finished installation? Does FAA expect that the badge read will trigger an automatic door opener? Or is it expected to be more traditional that the badge read is followed by a manual opening of the unlatched door? Traditional – badge read followed by a manual opening of the door.
6. It is unclear in the SOW (re: items #8 and #10) if existing access control, security and ACS (actuator) devices should be re-used and connected to new doors, or if all new access control, security and ACS devices will be needed as part of this contract. Please clarify which existing components, if any, can be re-used on these two Control Room doors. Replace/reinstall existing system on new doors.
7. Is there a product standard at this ARTCC for door hardware and security components? It appears that Appendix G & H do not give a basis of design or product specification for door hardware and security components, but rather only a performance spec. If there is a “facility standard” that should be matched, please provide that information to bidders. American made products which meet the required specifications.
8. If FAA has an annual maintenance contract with a company to maintain the existing access control and/or security system at the ABQ ARTCC, please provide contact information for that company.
Coordination should be facilitated through ARTCC POC.
9. Will it be a requirement of this contract to provide programming to new access control devices, or will FAA program all new devices furnished and installed under this contract? There is no requirement to program. Existing service contractor will perform programming of system.
10. On prior door projects with automatic opener hardware, it has been found that if the crash bar assembly, relays and motor module are procured from different manufacturers, the door actuators do not function properly. Please advise if a requirement should be added to this scope of work to require that all automatic opener components be obtained from the same manufacturer. These are not automatic doors, so this is not an issue.
1. Sound Transmission Class (STC) Rating:
o Do you require STC-rated items for this project? No o If yes, please specify the desired level of sound transmission control.
2. Bullet-Resistant Glass:
o Kindly confirm the type of bullet-resistant glass required. No.
o Please provide details regarding the size of the glass kits needed. Standard 6 inch by 20 inch to allow personnel to see if there are individuals on the other side of the door.
3. Existing Frame Conditions:
o The on-site team noted that the current frame is hollow steel, which does not provide effective sound transmission control. Can the existing frame remain, or would you prefer an alternative solution? Existing frame can be reused.
4. Fire-Rated Doors:
o The team also mentioned that fire-rated doors (90-minute rating) might be needed, while the existing doors are not rated. Could you confirm if 90-minute fire-rated doors are required for this project? Yes.
5. Door Flex and Core Specifications:
o The current doors have been reported to flex due to excessive glass. Would you prefer a steel-stiffened core to address this issue? Yes.
o Alternatively, please advise if a polystyrene core, honeycomb core, or polyurethane core would be acceptable. No.
