Q&A

1) Regarding loading and unloading times , do you have an estimate of how long it will take to load and unload these Items? Should we have a drop trailer at the shipper and receiver for a few days to get loaded and unloaded or will this be live loaded?

2) Are the chains attached to the anchors? My assumption is detached, however just wanting to confirm.

How large is one shot of chain? Will the chains be loose or palletized?

Here is the response I received from Suisan Bay Reserve Fleet, Benicia, CA for questions 1 and 2

• Chain will not be attached to the anchors.

• One shot of chain = 90 feet.

• The chains will be loose, not palletized.

• The ten (10) shots of 2 ¾” chain will be broken down into one shot lengths. We will provide the detachable links so BRF can reassemble them after delivery. It is easier for us to load the trailer one shot at a time.

• Each shot of 2 ¾” chain weighs 6400 lbs. It is estimated that weight- and space-wise, this will all fit on one trailer. We will fake them down lengthwise on the trailer. We’ve done this several times before.

• We are providing four (4) anchors: two (2) 25,000 lb. balanced fluke anchors and two (2) 18,000 lb.

stockless anchors. Due to weight and size, we recommend two (2) trailers, and would load one 25K anchor and one 18K anchor on each.

• Schedule… We should plan on this being a two-day event:

o Day 1 – load the chain. This will take probably 2 – 4 hours. Let’s do this in the morning.

o Day 2 – load two anchors on the first truck of the day, then two anchors on the second truck. I’d allow for two hours per truck.

o This will allow us time to pre-stage the chain on the crane barge’s deck prior to load Day 1, offload the chain on Day 1, then pre-stage the anchors on deck in the afternoon, offload the anchors on Day 2.

• Notes on the facility:

o we cannot accept lowboy trailers on the pier because the ramp up from the parking lot to the pier deck has an 11% grade and a lowboy will bottom out. A low-profile trailer with movable rear wheels can negotiate the incline.

o The loading area is at the end of a 1500-foot long pier. The pier’s roadway width is 18 feet. The truck will not be able to turn around at the end of the pier. The trucker should back down the pier to load. We will clear some of the parking lot area for the trucker to turn around before backing down the pier.

• Our hours are Monday – Friday, 0700-1730. Recommend first truck arrival at 0800.

• We have no area to stage trailers, so this should be live loaded.

• Shippers can get a birds-eye view of our facility by going to Google Earth or Satellite view in Google

Maps and searching on Suisun Bay Reserve Fleet, Solano County, CA. Zoom out and you’ll see the pier. Sorry, the pierhead isn’t quite big enough for a tractor trailer rig to turn around on.

• Our physical address is 2595 Lake Herman Road, Benicia, CA 94510. It’s exit 61 off Interstate

680. However, if drivers are relying on GPS to find us, be sure they do a reality check and get a visual on us, because GPS directions will lead you up the hill in the opposite direction, away from the bay.

3) Are we allowed to email quote or do you want regular mail? All quotes should be emailed to aline.smith@dot.gov.
