About this file
This is a Technical Specifications document for the Granite School District (GSD) related to the reconstruction of the baseball diamond infield at Skyline High School, located at 3251 East 3760 South, Salt Lake City, Utah 84109. The project scope includes removal and disposal of the existing infield skin layer and sub-layer to a depth of approximately 9 inches below finish grade, relocation of irrigation heads from the first and third base lines, sub-base compaction, installation of a new sub-layer and infield skin, sod replacement where indicated or damaged, and haul-off of all excavation and demolition materials. The infield skin surface shall be 4 inches deep when finished and compacted, consisting of clean, dry clay mixed with washed mason-type sand in a reddish brown color with specific particle size analysis requirements (70-75% sand content, 25-30% combined silt and clay, silt-to-clay ratio of 0.5-1.0). A qualified Sports Field Contractor must demonstrate five or more field construction projects with reference contact information and must employ a Certified Field Builder on-site throughout the project. All grades must be established using laser-guided equipment consisting of an agricultural tractor equipped with flotation tires and a five to seven foot laser-guided scraper capable of grading within 1/4 inch of desired elevations. The project must be completed by August 8, 2026, to accommodate Owner occupancy. Submittals must be provided electronically in Adobe PDF format, and shop drawings with field changes must be submitted for record-keeping purposes. An as-built conformance survey must be completed prior to project closeout, with all underground utilities surveyed before being covered.
The Owner will employ an independent testing laboratory to conduct material testing and quality assurance sampling throughout construction at the Owner's expense, unless otherwise noted. The Sports Field Contractor must submit one-gallon samples of infield material from the supplier's stockpile and provide composite samples representing every 100 tons to be shipped, with testing conducted using ASTM F 1632-18 standards. The infield mix must achieve 85-90% compaction on a Standard Proctor Test (ASTM D 698-21) and yield 1.35 tons per cubic yard when placed loose or 1.5 tons per cubic yard when compacted. Material shall be placed in two-inch lifts with scarification between lifts to facilitate bonding. Top dressing shall be applied following inspection using either expanded shale at 0.47 pounds per square foot or calcined clay at 0.75 pounds per square foot, with a minimum depth of 1/8 inch and maximum of 3/16 inch. The Contractor must provide a 10-ton stockpile of infield mix material for future Owner use. The project is subject to a pre-bid meeting requirement, with award recommendation scheduled for the July 7, 2026 GSD Board meeting, and final award to be issued following board approval. The specifications require compliance with all applicable local, municipal, and state laws and regulations, and the General Contractor/Construction Manager is responsible for obtaining all customary local permits.
