About this file

This is a fiber data cabling specification document for Grand Rapids Public Schools (GRPS) related to the eRate 2026 Fiber Data Cabling Upgrade Project in Michigan. The specification mandates the use of CommScope LazrSPEED OM4 fiber optic cabling systems for all installations, with cables running in a star topology from the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) to all Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDFs). The project requires plenum-rated innerduct and cables throughout all areas, with terminations using CommScope LazrSPEED LC connectors. The contractor must supply three dual-strand fiber patch cords for the MDF per IDF and three dual-strand patch cords for each IDF. All installations must be certified by the manufacturer for a minimum 20-year warranty on the entire channel, with certification and cable test results delivered to GRPS Management Information Systems. Cable support must utilize cable trays where present or independent support brackets mounted to building structure, with support requirements complying with City of Grand Rapids building and electrical codes.

The specification includes detailed technical and installation requirements addressing coring (minimum 2-inch diameter with maximum 40 percent fill), fire stopping using EIA/TIA-569 standards and applicable building codes, grounding per ANSI/TIA/EIA-607 standards, and comprehensive testing utilizing bi-directional fiber testing at 850nm wavelength. The contractor bears responsibility for all coring costs, fire stopping of all penetrations, and must provide complete as-built AutoCAD drawings, detailed cable record spreadsheets with labeling schemes, and inventory documentation including manufacturer information, model numbers, serial numbers, and installation locations. All cable runs must be continuous without joints or splices, with each fiber termination outlet labeled using adhesive-backed labels meeting U.L. 969 standards. Testing must be conducted end-to-end using light source and power meter equipment, conforming to EIA/TIA, IEEE, and ANSI specifications prior to system cutover.

Grand Rapids Public Schools Fiber Data Cabling Specification

INTRODUCTION

GRPS requires COMMSCOPE LazrSPEED OM4 fiber optic cabling systems for all fiber optic cabling installations.

The COMMSCOPE LazrSPEED fiber optic cabling will link the Main Distribution Frame (MDF) to all Intermediate Distribution Frames (IDFs).

All components of the fiber optic cabling system must be as specified in the Data Cabling Parts Specifications section located at the end of this document. All fiber optic cables shall be terminated with COMMSCOPE LazrSPEED LC connectors.

The COMMSCOPE LazrSPEED fiber optic cabling installation shall be certified by the manufacturer’s certification program for a minimum 20 year warranty on the entire channel. This certification along with cable test results must be delivered to:

Management Information Systems c/o Data Cabling Certifications Grand Rapids Public Schools 1331 Matin Luther King Jr St SE Grand Rapids, MI 49506

INNERDUCT AND PLENUM RATED CABLE

All fiber optic cabling shall be installed using innerduct. Bidders shall quote using plenum rated innerduct and cables in all areas.

FIBER PATCH CORDS

Contractor shall supply patch cords for cross connection or inter-connection of fiber connector panels.

For the MDF, the Contractor shall provide three (3) dual strand fiber patch cords for each IDF. For each IDF, the Contractor shall provide three (3) dual strand fiber patch cords.

CABLE AND COMMUNICATIONS OUTLET LABELING

Each fiber termination outlet shall be labeled (to be clearly visible) with an adhesive-backed label such as those available from Brady USA, Inc.

Adhesive labels shall meet adhesion, defacement, legibility, and exposure requirements as defined in U.L. 969.

A labeling scheme agreed upon by the Contractor(s) and the Owner shall be used.

CABLE SUPPORT

Where cable tray is present, cable is to be neatly installed in the cable trays in an organized manner. In areas that are not equipped with cable tray, communication wiring shall be independently supported and not laid on top of or in direct contact with ceiling grids or panels. Support brackets will be mounted off of the deck or the building steel. Mounting on conduit, ducts, or pipes is not acceptable. Bridle rings must not be used, instead use “J” hooks.

Cable support must be installed in accordance with the City of Grand Rapid’s building and electrical codes.

CONTINUOUS RUNS

Each run of cable between the termination points shall be continuous without any joints or splices.

CORING

The Contractor shall be responsible for any required coring and is to identify and include these costs in the base bid. All cores are to be fitted with sleeves, bushings, and fire stopping. All work must comply with the EIA/TIA-569 standard and city, state and federal building codes. Wiring closets will require a minimum of (2) 4” cores for cabling. All other walls will require a minimum of (1) 2” core. No cores will be smaller than 2” in diameter.

No core will exceed 40% fill.

FIRE STOPPING

Any walls penetrated to facilitate the routing of communication wiring shall, upon completion of that wiring, be fire stopped using approved methods as outlined in the EIA/TIA-569 standard Annex A, National Electric Code, and all applicable State, County, and City ordinances. The Contractor shall be responsible for fire stopping all penetrations that are used for routing of the Contractors cable regardless of who made the penetration access.

No penetrations are to occur in an elevator shaft or elevator mechanical room.

GROUNDING

Grounding shall meet the appropriate requirements and practices of applicable authorities or codes.

Additionally, grounding/bonding shall conform to the ANSI/TIA/EIA-607 standard.

TOPOLOGY

The fiber optic cables shall be run using a star topology. Each cable shall be run from the MDF to every individual IDF.

INVENTORY RECORDS

The Contractor shall provide the Owner with documentation for each component provided. An inventory list of all Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) equipment shall be supplied clearly indicating manufacturer, model, serial number, and installation location. Any custom equipment shall be identified, described and located.

DOCUMENTATION

The Contractor shall prepare complete field installation drawings. As-built drawings shall be documented as layers on Owner-provided architectural AutoCAD plans. The Contractor shall document all data drop locations with jack numbers, IDF/MDF locations with routing of all cable runs.

CABLE RECORDS

The Contractor shall provide the Owner with a detailed cable record spreadsheet documenting the installation and the labeling scheme that was used.

TESTING

Testing of cabling shall be performed prior to system cut over. All fiber cables shall include bi-directional testing at 850nm wavelength.

All tests must be conducted from end to end. This must be performed with a light source and power meter. All tests must conform to specifications of EIA/TIA, IEEE, and ANSI.
