About this file
This is a vehicle identification guide attachment prepared by the Towing and Recovery Association of America (TRAA) for standardizing communications between law enforcement and towing operators regarding vehicle classification and incident response procedures.
The guide provides a comprehensive classification system for vehicles based on Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and tire configuration, ranging from Class 1 light-duty vehicles (6,000 lbs or less) through Class 8 heavy-duty vehicles (33,001 lbs and over). The document specifies that Classes 1 and 2 encompass passenger vehicles, light trucks, minivans, SUVs, and full-size vans, while Classes 3 through 6 cover mid-size vehicles including delivery trucks, motor homes, ambulances, and small to medium buses. Classes 7 and 8 include large delivery trucks, motor coaches, refuse trucks, cement mixers, and tractor-trailer combinations. The guide emphasizes that correct vehicle identification requires specific information including year, make, model, DOT classification, vehicle location, type of tow required, drive configuration, damage assessment, load status, and notation of any hazardous materials placarding.
The document includes VIN code references to identify vehicle year based on the eighth character from the right in the vehicle identification number, with year codes spanning from 1980 through 2012. Additionally, the guide provides tow truck and car carrier classifications distinguishing between light-duty, medium-duty, and heavy-duty equipment, including specifications for standard tow trucks, carriers, and low boy trailers. This standardized classification system is designed to facilitate quick and efficient clearing of incident scenes while minimizing traffic disruption through improved communication between law enforcement and towing industry professionals.
