About this file

This document is a Statement of Work (SOW) for the fabrication, factory assembly fit check, factory inspection, painting, and delivery of a Horizontal Sample Apparatus for the ATLAS AMIS project at Argonne National Laboratory (ANL).

The SOW provides details on the required Horizontal Sample Apparatus components, including a Torque Plate Assembly, Sample Prep Rack, Counterbalance Assembly, Horizontal Stage Carriage Assembly, and Deck and Guard Rail Assembly. Quantities for each component are specified. The SOW outlines the schedule, communication requirements, materials, hardware, quality assurance, and shipping details. ANL will provide the CAD drawings and 3D models. Suppliers are invited to provide design improvement suggestions. This SOW is referenced in the related federal contract opportunity solicitation number 4-B176-Q-00518-00 for the Horizontal Sample Apparatus for ATLAS AMIS, with a preference for small businesses and domestic manufacturers.

1 Overview As part of the ATLAS AMIS project, sample insertion is being changed to enable horizontal insertion.

ANL will provide CAD drawings defining the details of the Horizontal Sample

Apparatus components. 3D CAD models will be available in STEP or Inventor format.

Supplier will provide Horizontal Sample Apparatus components as itemized in the Deliverables section. Installation of the Horizontal Sample Apparatus components are not part of this SOW.

2 Deliverables The scope of this Statement of Work is for the fabrication, factory assembly fit check, factory inspection, painting, and delivery of Horizontal Sample Apparatus, including hardware, as defined on the respective component drawings. Quantities of each item are noted in the following paragraph.

4 Meetings and Communication

4.1 Communication -

All communication between parties shall be channeled through the ANL Point of Contact.

5 Horizontal Sample Apparatus - Configuration The Horizontal Sample Apparatus is intended to reduce the time and effort required to replace samples at the ATLAS AMIS instrument. The safety of operations associated with the sample exchanges will also be significantly improved.

A counterbalance is provided to support the weight of the Horizontal Stage as it is removed from the beamline and moved to the Sample Prep Rack. This allows the Horizontal Stage to be easily and safely under full control of a single technician.

The Sample Prep Rack rolls the Sample Stage over 90 degrees, so the sample surface is face up for sample replenishment.

The Horizontal Stage Carriage Assembly allows the Horizontal Stage to be supported from the Counterbalance arm with 5 degrees of freedom. The Horizontal Stage Carriage Assembly has provisions for adjusting mass to tune balance.

A Deck and Guardrail Assembly provides support for the Counterbalance and Sample Prep Rack, while guarding the backside of the Counterbalance Assembly.

The Torque Plate Assembly provides torsional strength to the beamline vacuum envelope, preventing damage to vacuum components in the event of off-normal loading.

Figure 2. Opposite view of the Horizontal Sample Apparatus.

6 Materials The Horizontal Sample Apparatus components will be made of materials as indicated on the part drawings. Some parts will require painting after fabrication as indicated on the part drawings. Paint color is noted on drawings. Observe notes about masking threaded features.

7 Hardware The Horizontal Sample Apparatus drawings indicate hardware via McMaster-Carr part numbers. Hardware from alternate sources may be substituted, provided the same grade and function requirements are met.

8 Design Improvement Suggestions As the Supplier is closest to the manufacturing processes involved, ANL is eager to consider design change recommendations that offer significant improvements in cost, quality or delivery. Such suggested changes should be communicated to the ANL Point of Contact individual in a timely manner.

9 Quality Assurance and Inspection

9.1 Quality Assurance

The Supplier shall make the Horizontal Sample Apparatus components as indicated on the part drawings to dimensions and tolerances as specified on the part drawings. Any deviations from the specifications of the drawings or this document shall be promptly reported to the ANL POC.

9.2 Receiving Inspection

ANL reserves the right to perform receipt inspection on the Horizontal Sample Apparatus components. Receiving inspection will include verification of quantity, visual verification of condition of parts, verification of key dimensional information, and review of Supplier quality reports.

10 Shipping The Horizontal Sample Apparatus components shall be shipped on pallet(s) that can be handled by a standard forklift, with reasonable care taken to prevent component damage. Items shall be protected from weather exposure during shipping.

Transportation schedules and delivery points are to be coordinated between parties.

11 References Drawings referenced in this SOW are itemized in the table below. Drawing -0006 is included in this list for reference only.
