About this file

This document is an Addendum to Request for Proposals (RFP) No. 4-B160-P-00193-00 for the procurement of Extraction Chicane Magnets for the ATLAS Multi-User Upgrade (AMUU) Project at Argonne National Laboratory.

The addendum revises the proposal due date to July 15, 2024 and provides answers to several technical questions related to the specifications, including the number of lenses required for the quadrupole triplet, the maximum magnetic field for the septum magnet, and the physical dimensions of the dipole and quadrupole magnets. The agency is open to some flexibility on the dimensions, but the space is very tight. The procurement will be awarded based on a Best Value criterion, and the work must be completed within 9 months of contract award. The contracting agency is the Department of Energy Office of Science.

6/13/2024 This addendum is being issued to modify the date proposals are due and answers to questions as follows:

Due date for proposals has been revised to reflect July 15, 2024.

Questions / Answers

Q: For the quadrupole triplet, the number of lenses in the table is listed as three. Is this requesting three quadrupole triplets (9 total quadrupoles) or three quadrupoles total (one triplet)?

A: Only one triplet = 3 lenses.

Q: The maximum field listed for the septum magnet is specified as < 5 Gauss. Is there a minimum distance from the magnet that you can provide for this specification?

A: The septum will be placed next to a superconducting buncher cavity, so 5 Gauss right outside the magnetic shield and should die down as you go farther.

Q: Dipole:

Is the maximum physical length along the ideal beam trajectory or in a cartesian plane?

A: That max physical length is in cartesian coordinates.

Q: Is there any flexibility to increase the limitation of this longitudinal dimension? We ask because simulations show this dipole running into saturation and a larger coil footprint may be required for thermal management.

A: The space is tight, we may have one inch to spare, so 72.5 cm instead of 70 cm.

Q: Septum:

Would like to know the distance from magnet to the non-defected beam. Alternatively, where is the region where the field needs to be less than 5 Gauss)

A: The limitation is not the non-deflected beam but rather a superconducting cavity used for bunching which is very close. The 5 Gauss we ask for is right off the magnetic shield of the septum and should die off from there.

Q: Quadrupole

Is there flexibility in the maximum physical lengths of both the individual magnets and the triplet? 25cm (90 cm – 2 * 32.5 cm) for a single quadrupole and 90cm for a triplet is extremely tight.

A: The space is very tight, maybe one or two inches to spare (3-5 cm).
