About this file

This file is a PVWatts Calculator analysis prepared by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) for the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). The document presents photovoltaic system performance projections for a proposed 45 kilowatt AC solar installation located in Richmond, Kentucky. The analysis includes monthly and annual energy output estimates, solar radiation data, and system specifications for a fixed roof-mounted array designed to support commercial energy generation objectives.

The projected system will generate an average of 63,251 kilowatt-hours annually, with an expected output range of 59,816 to 65,920 kWh per year based on 30 years of historical weather data for the location. The DC system size is specified at 52.65 kW with a DC to AC size ratio of 1.2, array tilt of 5 degrees, and azimuth orientation of 150 degrees, resulting in a capacity factor of 13.7 percent. At an average retail electricity rate of $0.081 per kilowatt-hour, the projected annual value of generated energy is $5,118. The analysis assumes standard commercial module types, fixed rack installation, 96 percent inverter efficiency, and 14.08 percent system losses. NREL's disclaimer notes that the modeling tool provides estimates subject to inherent assumptions and uncertainties and does not account for variations between different PV technologies or site-specific characteristics beyond the specified inputs.

Text version

Caution: Photovoltaic system performance predictions calculated by PVWatts® include many inherent assumptions and uncertainties and do not reflect variations between PV technologies nor site-specific characteristics except as represented by PVWatts® inputs. For example, PV modules with better performance are not differentiated within PVWatts® from lesser performing modules. Both NREL and private companies provide more sophisticated PV modeling tools (such as the System Advisor Model at https://sam.nrel.gov) that allow for more precise and complex modeling of PV systems.

The expected range is based on 30 years of actual weather data at the given location and is intended to provide an indication of the variation you might see. For more information, please refer to this NREL report:

The Error Report.
