About this file

This document contains questions and answers regarding Solicitation Number 431610 for Be Windows for BLIP, a project for the Department of Energy Office of Science. The opportunity involves providing beryllium windows with a limited scope for minor design modifications to dimensions or materials. The required quantity is two windows, with delivery required in 10-11 months. The document does not share the project budget. Previous suppliers have not experienced issues, and the project milestones and timeline of 10-11 months for delivery are acceptable. Beryllium fabrication presents challenges, particularly for long tubes and thin windows. The current part's surface finish is Ra-63 micro inches, and improvements could be considered if they do not affect the design goal of the beam line for isotope production. The opportunity allows for proposed design changes if the overall dimensions and goals remain unchanged and are approved in preliminary design reviews.

QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

431610 Be Windows for FLIP

October 30, 2023

1) Is there room for design modification with regards to specifications, dimensions, or materials?

a. There is a very limited scope in changing some minor dimensions, design modificaon with regards to easing fabricaon and changing material grade, not material type. Any proposal for changes needs to be looked upon and to be checked if that affects our goal.

2) What is the required quantity, order frequency, and delivery schedule?

a. Quanty = 2 now, delivery in 10 months.

3) (If you are able to share) What is the expected budget for this project?

a. BSA will not share budget. This is being competed and a fair and reasonable price determinaon will be made prior to any award.

4) Have there been any issues or challenges with previous suppliers of this part?

a. No. We are inving more suppliers to parcipate in our procurement process.

5) Are the project milestones and deliverable timeline firm? If they are not, please advise what could be acceptable by BNL.

a. 10-11 months delivery is fine.

6) Are there other projects at BNL that involve beryllium components which are hard to source? If yes, are you able to share the specific technical challenges?

a. We do use Be tubes and face long procurement me. We are inving more suppliers, checking if any of them can reduce the delivery me. Be fabricaon is always a challenge especially making long tubes, thin windows and welding to Aluminum.

7) What is the surface finish on the current part ?

a. Ra – 63 micro inches

8) Are there any areas that BNL would benefit from improvement in their current part?

a. The current part will be used in the beam line for isotope producon. Beam losses at Be window is less in comparison to other heavy metals. It improves isotope producon rate and decreases radiaon level.

9) It is mentioned, Preliminary Design and Preliminary Design Review Meeting, does this mean this is a new first-of-a-kind design or an existing design?

a. It is not enrely new design, based on exisng design. However, it gives some scope to supplier to propose any minor design changes as long as overall dimension and design goal remain unaffected. Those changes will be discussed in preliminary design review meengs and needs to be approved by BSA before supplier starts fabricang. Supplier is free to create their own fabricaon drawing.
