About this file

This document is a Lead Health Risk Assessment Report for Station Humboldt Bay, a U.S. Coast Guard facility located near Eureka, California. The assessment was conducted on March 7, 2018, by the Health, Safety and Work Life Service Center (HSWL-SC), Safety and Environmental Health Division, to evaluate the presence of lead-containing paint (LCP) throughout the main station building and outlying structures.

The assessment utilized a Portable X-Ray Fluorescence (XRF) Analyzer to collect non-destructive readings across multiple building areas and components. Evaluation criteria established lead-containing paint as materials exceeding 0.00 mg/cm² and lead-based paint as materials exceeding 1.00 mg/cm². The detailed findings, documented with diagrams and photographs in the appendices, identified significant variability in lead content across painted surfaces, particularly notable on the third deck where similarly colored wall surfaces showed markedly different lead levels above and below chair rails. Specific areas of concern included the South Side Column of the exterior (26.50 mg/cm²), Training Room South Wall on the first deck (2.70 mg/cm²), Passage Way Windowsill (11.60 mg/cm²), and multiple locations on the third deck including the Cupola Access area and South Room where readings ranged from 2.50 to 16.30 mg/cm². The report notes that due to the building's 1936 construction date and extensive repair and renovation projects, destructive sampling was minimized to preserve the National Register of Historical Places structure.
