About this file

This document is a Shipping Expectations & Guidelines document for the Dakota Warehouse operated by FDC Logistics at 1313 E Saint Patrick St., Rapid City, SD 57701. Shippers are required to provide advance notification before shipping by emailing sdshipments@fnal.gov. The warehouse operates Monday through Friday from 7:00 AM to 3:30 PM and requires appointments, which can be scheduled by calling 605-389-3344.

The facility has significant operational limitations that shippers must understand. The Dakota Warehouse has no overhead lift capabilities (crane or gantry) and no ground-level dock doors. Any shipment requiring special handling beyond forklift or pallet jack operations must receive FDC Logistics Team approval at least two weeks in advance. Damaged shipments from vendors will be rejected, and shipments arriving without proper notification, bills of lading, or exceeding warehouse handling capabilities may be returned to the vendor. The document specifies detailed requirements for different trailer types: flatbed and Conestoga shipments may not fit through warehouse doors and are problematic for items over 8 feet in length or 8,000 pounds; stepdeck, dropdeck, lowboy, and double-drop trailers require special arrangements and approval; dry van and box truck freight must be palletized or crated, with items over 8 feet or 8,000 pounds requiring approval; and 40-foot or 20-foot containers must have doors facing the rear of the trailer and must be locked. All cargo must accommodate forklift access from the end and comply with dock door dimensions. Items on wheels must have locked wheels, chock blocks, and straps for security, while top-heavy or easily tipped items must be laid on their side and secured or, if that would cause damage, secured upright to prevent movement during transit.
