About this file
This document details an electrical redesign plan for modifying electrical infrastructure, specifically involving conduit, wiring, and panel replacements in the Buffalo VA Medical Center. The plan involves several key modifications: running a new 4" conduit from Room E-10 (pullbox) to Room E-25 (electrical room), replacing the existing panel SPP-1 in the parking ramp electrical room, installing a new 200A heavy duty fused disconnect, and reconfiguring existing fire alarm and feeder cables.
Key requirements include swapping conduits for BLH-2 and fire alarm systems, pulling out and re-threading existing cables, and ensuring all work occurs outside normal operating hours with VA coordination at least 30 days in advance. The contractor must use copper cabling (4#250 + #4G), mount the new electrical panel on galvanized or stainless steel brackets, label the existing pullbox cover with cable types, and be responsible for final connections and testing. The project emphasizes minimal disruption to ongoing operations and precise electrical infrastructure modifications.

Location of underground conduit between BLDG #1 and the Parking Ramp. Location of pullbox in
BLDG 1.
Existing pullbox in Room E-10 (cover off):
Existing Conditions showing existing fire alarm cable and feeder for panel BLH-2:
Proposed changes required to utilize existing conduit (fire alarm and feeder for BLH-2 swap conduits, add new divider to separate low voltage from high voltage):
Run new 4” conduit above ceiling from E-10 (pullbox) to E-25 (electrical room – ATS-31):
ATS-31 located in room E-25 (power source for proposed new panel SPP-1, to be located in the parking ramp electrical room):
Remove existing 100A disconnect and install new 200A heavy duty fused disconnect on existing unistrut. Connect new 4” conduit.
Install new junction box above new 200A heavy duty fused disconnect:
Proposed new disconnect and junction box configuration:
Panel SPP-1 in existing parking ramp electrical room (to be removed – refer to project electrical drawings):
Panel SPP-1 to be removed and replaced with a new panel – extend 4” conduit to new panel:
Updated one line diagram:
Additional Notes:
• Existing feeder cables for BLH-2: cables to be pulled out, and then pulled back in through the alternate conduit.
• Existing and fire alarm wire: to be pulled out, and then pulled back through the alternate conduit. Contractor shall coordinate with Simplex / Johnson Controls when disconnecting and reconnecting, including final connections and testing.
• Both the fire alarm cable and feeder for BLH-2 may be re-used, as long as the cables / wires are not damaged when pulled back out.
• Swapping BLH-2 and fire alarm conduits will require outages. Outages and pulling wire / cable will need to occur outside of normal operating hours, or over weekends, as approved by the
VA. All outages are required to be coordinated with the VA a minimum of 30 days in advance of the outage.
• Cable size between new panel SPP-1 and existing ATS-31 shall be 4#250 + #4G and not 4#4/0 +
#4G as indicated on plan sheet E-601. All electrical cabling shall be copper.
• Contractor will remain responsible for finalizing all connections and testing.
• Contractor is responsible for providing labels on the cover of the existing pullbox located in room E-10. Labels shall read ‘fiber optic’, ‘Fire Alarm’, ‘Data’, ‘High Voltage’, ‘High Voltage’, ‘High Voltage’. Contractor to secure labels to the cover to identify the location and type of cabling / wires. Labels shall be1 /16" thick plastic engraved acrylic plates or VA approved equal. Labels shall be positively secured to covers.
• New electrical panel SPP-1 shall not be mounted directly to concrete walls within the existing electrical room. Panel shall be mounted on galvanized or stainless steel mounting brackets, such as Unistrut.
