73.

2/26/2024 3/25/2024 Providing blast rated items curtain walls, doors/frames, precast panels, glazing, and louvers is straight forward.

The problems lines with the supporting structural steel.

This will cause an issue during bidding. If General Contractors are trying to meet the blast rated design per the VA Physical Security and Resiliency Design Manual, it will cause a large difference in pricing. After looking through the structural steel drawings there is no added steel supports around the curtain walls, storefronts, windows/glazing, louvers, or any exterior openings that tie back into the structural steel. Is this something that the VA wants to provide a design prior to bidding or deal with this as a modification to the contract later on? For far a responsible bidding we either need to bid what is shown on the drawings or be provided with details especially in relation to steel supports required around opens on the exterior for the building to achieve blast rated design requirements. For one example CW06 should be some sort of steel behind the curtain wall mullions (horizontally and vertically) providing additional structural support and somewhere for the curtain wall clips to be installed to create a blasted rated assembly. Along with the add steel there might need to be some additional framing and drywall to cover steel or not if the VA wants to have exposed steel.

Contractor to bid per drawings and specifications.
