Ergonomic Risk Factors and Other Observations Recommendations/Actions
Desk too high encouraging contact pressure on forearms, isolation of movement to the wrists, and perching onto the desk.
Adjusted height adjustable desk to proper seated and standing heights and set presets.
Chair is too high encouraging poor leg circulation and pelvic postures.
Lowered chair seat height to discourage poor leg circulation and pelvic postures.
Planting hands in front of keyboard when typing encouraging wrist extension and contact pressure on carpal structures.
Place a keyboard pad in front of keyboard to discourage contact pressure on palms and wrist extension when typing.
Wires of displays tangling around the work surface and displays. Employee prefers a type of cable management kit to have the cords placed out of the way.
Obtain a cable management kit and install on underside of desk to clear the desk surface for work.
Display too far encouraging neck protraction. Brought displays closer to discourage neck protraction.
Employee’s height 65” Dominant/mouse hand Right/Right Floor to thigh/back of knee 19.0
Corrective eyewear Single Buttock to back of knee 19.0 Heel height 1.0
Ergonomic Report:
Microbreaks are strongly recommended to reduce overall muscle fatigue every 30-45 minutes. Performing some simple stretching ad mobilization exercises during the breaks will aid in muscular recuperation.

Recommended Computer Workstation Guidelines:
Chair:
▪ Seat height: hips at or slightly above knee level, with feet resting on floor or footrest.
▪ Seat depth: allow 1-2" between backs of knees and front of seat.
▪ Lumbar support height adjusted to support lower back.
▪ Change your position often. If desired, alternate between two seated postures:
(1) Most of the time: back fully rested against backrest, head over shoulders.
(2) For occasional periods of 5-10 minutes: sit toward the front of the chair with head over shoulders, shoulders over hips (do not lean forward or reach; rest elbows at the sides).
Monitor:
▪ Monitor height: first line of type on screen at or slightly below eye level.
▪ Center monitor(s) and place at a comfortable viewing distance, usually at arm's length (20”-28”).
▪ Rest your eyes periodically! 20-20-20 Rule: every 20 min. look at least 20 ft. away for 20 sec.
Recommended keyboard tray adjustments:
▪ Tray height: keyboard and mouse at or slightly below bent elbow height (elbows at sides).
▪ Tray angle: either parallel with the floor or at a slight negative tilt (front higher than back).
Recommended sit/stand desk adjustments:
▪ For seated work: desk height set so that keyboard and mouse are at or slightly below elbow height (elbows resting at sides, wrists flat).
▪ Monitor height: top line of type at or slightly below eye level. (Monitor at about arm’s length.)
▪ When standing, raise the desk so that keyboard and mouse are at or slightly below standing elbow height (elbows resting at sides, wrists flat).
▪ If necessary, raise the monitor a bit so that the top line of type is at or slightly below eye level.
▪ We recommend standing for about 15 min./hour. If longer periods of standing are desired, gradually build up to 30 min./hour, if comfortable. It is now generally recommended to stand for not more than 2-3 hrs./day.
Keyboard:
▪ Sit close enough to keyboard to avoid reaching.
▪ Keyboard height: elbows relaxed at sides, wrists flat and at or slightly below elbow height, keyboard at wrist level.
▪ Float wrists or use a “light free floating” keying technique (palms gliding over palm rest).
Mouse:
▪ Elbow at side, wrist flat and at or slightly below elbow level.
▪ Keep wrist flat; place entire hand on mouse; avoid gripping, planting wrist on work surface or pivoting at the wrist.
Use full arm movements to move mouse.
▪ Remove hands from the mouse when not actually activating it.
General:
▪ Alternate computing and non-computing tasks when possible.
▪ Keep commonly used items within near reach (14”-24”).
▪ Use a headset or hold telephone handset rather than cradle it between the ear and shoulder.
▪ Alternate between sit and stand postures throughout the workday as much as possible; when seated for long periods, stand 15-20 sec. every 15-20 min.
12-Point Computer Workstation Self-Evaluation
1. Adjust your chair height so that you can rest your feet comfortably on the floor in front of you. Your hips should be either at the same height or slightly higher than your knees. Adjust the backrest so that it supports your low back. If possible, change the backrest tilt occasionally, between upright and slightly reclined, 90 to
110 degrees.
2. Keep your neck neutral: in most cases, the top of the screen should be level with or just below your eyes.
3. Cover windows or move light sources in order to avoid glare on your monitor.
4. The viewing distance to the monitor should be comfortable, usually between 22 and 28” from your eyes.
5. Use a footrest if your hips are too high or if your feet don’t easily reach the floor.
6. If needed, use a document holder to support papers: avoid bending or rotating your neck.
7. Keep your wrists neutral (flat) while typing and mousing (elbows at sides, keyboard at or slightly below elbow level). Either “float” your wrists or use a soft palm rest, gliding your palms over the palm rest while typing. Use your arm and shoulder to move the mouse, rather than your wrist and fingers.
8. Rest your elbows at your sides (at a 90 to 100 degree angle), shoulders relaxed.
9. The monitor and keyboard should both be centered in front of you.
10. If you use a keyboard tray, keep it flat or at a slight negative tilt (tilting down toward the back).
11. Take a two- to three- minute micro-break at least once an hour. Get up from the computer, do some gentle stretches, or just walk around.
