About this file

This document is a technical assessment of a VA Chapel audiovisual system installation that was delivered in an incomplete and non-functional state.

The original installation lacked all documentation, drawings, manuals, programming code, and touch panel layouts, with no personnel trained on system operation or design intent. The Crestron system controller and Apple iPad interface require extensive reprogramming, with recommendations to implement from scratch for optimal effectiveness. Key deficiencies include missing control wiring preventing remote PTZ camera operation via the iPad, non-functional iPad buttons, and incomplete equipment connections. The video subsystem uses Aurora IP transcoders for switching and routing through a 24-port network switch, with content displayed on five Samsung LCD monitors (four in chapel, one in hallway) and capability for broadcast to patient rooms on channels 68 and 34.2. Video sources include a PTZoptics camera, laptop, BrightSign digital signage player, Epiphan Pearl-mini recorder, Sony Blu-Ray player, and Aurora VLX streaming encoder/decoder; however, the cable channel broadcast feed lacks embedded audio in the HDMI stream. The audio subsystem employs a BiAmp TesiraFORTE DAN CI digital signal processor with 12 analog inputs, 8 outputs, and Dante networking, powering two JBL CBT column speakers through a Crown 600-watt amplifier. Audio sources include three AKG wireless microphones (with discontinued FCC frequencies), laptop, BrightSign player, Epiphan Pearl-mini, TASCAM CD player, Sony Blu-Ray player, and Aurora VLX encoder/decoder. The equipment inventory lists 30 major components distributed across the chapel, credenza rack locations, and lectern areas.

1. Description of System

From what can be determine there was no documentation, drawings, and manuals, programming code, touch panel layouts delivered to the VA before or after turning the system over. No personnel were instructed or trained on the setup and operation of the installed system. We also believe that no discussions were held about the overall design, media to be incorporated, audio and video sources, layout, and functionality of the controls and touch panel.

Using the hardware inventory, internal wiring and iPad control layout in the

Chapel system, we were able to develop an understanding of the original installation. Not all of the existing equipment had been completely installed.

There is missing control wiring, cabling, some audio and video devices not connected to the correct device. Some of the iPad buttons currently work as intended; some don't perform any function or execute the wrong function impeding operation of the Chapel system.

An example is the PTZ camera is not able to be remotely controlled using the iPad, there was no control wiring originally installed, thus positional presets cannot be recalled by the operator. The camera IR remote is the only method available to the presenter to setup and recall positional presets, adjust zoom and tilt.

Control of the equipment, routing of sources and room operation is accomplished using a Crestron system controller with an Apple iPad as the presenter interface. These two units would require the most programming and re-configuration but most likely starting new would be the most effective route. All hardware control and user operation in the Chapel is handled by these units. While not completely implemented this would included but not be limited to: power, source selection, signal routing, transport operation

(play-stop-pause etc.), camera PTZ presets and positioning, video and audio recording control.

Input selection, encoding, decoding and routing of the video content (with audio when available) uses Aurora lP transcoders as switching hardware and is distributed using a 24 port network switch.

Presenter selected content is displayed on four large LCD monitors located in the Chapel, a single display located outside in the hall and can be broadcasted to patient rooms on channel 68 and 34.2 (set dependent) for hospital viewing. The stage right lectern has a 21" Acer confidence monitor that is connected to program source by a Kramer wireless extender.

It was originally intended to broadcast live services, prerecorded video and inspirational messages to the Chapel displays, on the VA cable channel and lobby display. The feed to the in-house cable channel was not originally connected and today only the video image is available for broadcast. This is due to audio never being routed to and embedded in the HDMI stream.

When there is no Chapel service or live content being displayed on the Chapel screens and broadcast channel, the BrightSign was to run a continuous loop and/or be programmed to play any or all content stored on the player at a specific date and time.

Current video inputs and outputs include the following (not all operational):

PTZoptics camera viewing of live services and other activities

Laptop computer, wired HDMI connection at credenza

BrightSign Pre-recorded digital signage content

Epiphan Pearl-mini Recording, switching and playback of video content

Sony Blue Ray player

Aurora VLX IP Streaming encoder/decoder HDMI channels n

Audio sources are processed and routed using a BiAmp TesiraFORTE DAN Cl digital media network solution. The Tesira is a fixed I/O DSP (digital signal processor) with 12 analog inputs, 8 analog outputs, 8 channels of USB audio with 32x32 channels of Dante. Audio amplifier is Crown 600 watt at 8 ohm driving 2 each JBL CBT 100LA-1-WH column speakers installed for room audio.

Audio inputs and outputs incorporate the following equipment (not all operational):

AKG 3 ea. wireless microphones - 2 ea. handheld and 1 ea. combination hand and lavaliere (frequencies have been discontinued by FCC)

Laptop computer, wired HDMI connection at credenza

BrightSign Digital signage content player

Epiphan Pearl-mini Recording and playback of live content

TASCAM CD player

Sony Blue Ray player

Aurora VLX IP Streaming encoder/decoder audio channel
