About this file

This is a Door Hardware specification section for the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center Police Dispatch Relocation project (Project 621 23 104, dated 03-01-24). The specification establishes comprehensive requirements for all door hardware and related items necessary for complete installation and operation of doors throughout the project.

The specification requires hardware compliance with ABAAS (Architectural Barriers Act Accessibility Standards), the International Building Code (IBC), NFPA 80 and NFPA 101 standards, and UL listings where applicable. Key hardware components include: butt hinges (three-knuckle type, with stainless steel for high-humidity areas); continuous hinges per ANSI/BHMA A156.26 Grade 1-600; overhead closers conforming to ANSI A156.4 Grade 1 with 50 percent adjustable closing force and adjustable hydraulic back-check; door stops per ANSI A156.16; overhead stops and holders per ANSI A156.8; mortise and cylindrical locks per ANSI standards with removable core cylinders; keys stamped with change numbers; protective plates (kick plates, mop plates, armor plates) per ANSI A156.6; and miscellaneous hardware including access door locks. Hardware finishes must conform to ANSI A156.18, with finishes 626 or 630 as standard, stainless steel (630) for exterior/high-humidity applications, and all hand-operated hardware must include anti-microbial/anti-fungal coating per ASTM E2180. Warranty periods are two years for general items, five years for locks and panic hardware, and ten years for door closers and continuous hinges. The specification includes five detailed hardware sets (1.0–5.0) for specific door types (L024C, L024, L024D, L032, L024B) with electric strikes, automatic door operators, card readers, and related access control components furnished by other sections or trades. Installation must follow specified hardware heights, hinge requirements by door dimensions, and include preinstallation meetings, final inspection with re-adjustment, and demonstration of all mechanical and electrical hardware systems.
