Shielding Design Recommendation:
Shielding design goals referencing NCRP 147 "Structural Shielding Design for Medical X-ray Imaging Facilities" Model NT/Pd
(P = 0.02 mGy/week in an uncontrolled areas, 0.1 mGy/week for controlled areas) requires lead thicknesses 1/64 inch to 1/32 inch. This excludes floor and ceiling concrete thicknesses. For the Nuclear Medicine department at MHVA, the department is on a terminal second floor requiring no shielding.
The shielding of the floor of this department should be verified as 6 inches of standard density concrete to meet shielding design requirements.
Areas labeled wall 1, wall 2a, wall 2b, wall 3a, wall 3b, and doors on the submitted room diagram will require the 1/32 inch lead shielding with a minimum of 7 feet in height. The area labeled viewing window on the room diagram requires lead equivalent glass meeting a minimum thickness of 1/64 inch of lead.

JAMES H. QUILLEN VA MEDICAL CENTER REQUIREMENTS
GENERAL INFORMATION
SECURITY / SAFETY
RULES / REGULATIONS
POLICIES, PERMITS, & PROCEDURES
1. GENERAL INTENTION (CONTACT INFO).
A. This specification section pertains to station policy for construction projects performed at the James H. Quillen VA Medical Center at
Mountain Home (Johnson City), Tennessee 37684. Safety and health concerns are taken seriously at this facility. Both our staff and yours are expected to strictly adhere to the regulations and requirements as specified herein. This is exceedingly important, since we must be primarily concerned for the safety of our patients. In this regard, OSHA Standards may protect worker safety and health, but they have minimal benefit for protecting the safety and health of our patients, due primarily to their differing medical conditions. Review this information as orientation with your personnel performing work on site. Where the requirements as outlined in this and section 01 00 00 are differing, the more stringent shall apply.
B. The Contracting Officer's Representative COR is responsible for the inspection of the work called for in the contract and specifications.
The Contracting Officer’s Representative will be James Tucker. This COR can be reached at 423-926-1171, ext. 7798. In the event the Contractor cannot reach the COR, he may contact the Alternate COR, Jacolby Darr, at 423-926-1171, ext. 7697. Inspections made by the COR are for the sole benefit of the Government and do not relieve the Contractor of any quality control responsibility.
C. The Safety Manager is responsible for safety inspections of all contract operations. The Safety Manager will be Shane Allen. The
Safety Manager can be reached at 423-926-1171, ext. 7334.
D. The Chief, Police Section is responsible for security at this facility.
The Police Chief will be Ralph Hopson and can be reached at 423-926-
