About this file
This document contains an RF shielding test confirmation report for the Murfreesboro VA Medical Center and a related federal contract opportunity notice. The RF shielding test report details measurements of RF shielding effectiveness of barriers surrounding an existing 1.5T MRI system at the medical center. Measurements were taken at 63.9 and 127.8 MHz at various points around the MRI scan room and on the roof. All observed results exceeded 100dB attenuation except at the door, where 52dB and 42dB were observed at the two frequencies tested. The conclusions determined that maintenance may be required for the door or door seal to meet the desired shielding effectiveness standards.
The related federal contract opportunity is a solicitation notice for project 626A4-CSI-105 to design and build site preparations for a new York MRI at the Alvin C. York VA Medical Center campus. The opportunity is issued by the VA Veterans Health Administration VISN 9. No further details are provided on requirements, response dates, or award information.

RF Shielding Test Confirmation – Murfreesboro VA Medical Center
Purpose:
Measure RF shielding effectiveness of existing RF shield
Method:
RF Shielding attenuation was measured using the MPB Group SEMS system with dipole antennae in the horizontal and vertical fields (Model: TX-Unit, Serial Number: 0140IST21OC20, calibrated on-site April 21, 2022). Measurements were made at 63.9 and 127.8 MHz. The summary results of the observed attenuation values are shown in Table 1. Measurements were taken at approximately 2-m intervals, at a distance of 1 m from the wall, along each wall and on the roof. The measurement locations around the MRI scanner room (Room G09G) are shown in Figure 1. Additional measurements were taken on the roof and around the roof vent and room door using the “sniff” loop antenna.
Results:
All observed results exceeded 100 dB attenuation (shielding effectiveness), except for at the door. At the door, 52 dB at 63.9 MHz and 42 dB at 127.8 MHz was observed.
Conclusions:
Generally, the attenuation levels are consistent with what would be expected for 1.5 T MRI systems.
However, some maintenance to the door and/or door seal may be required to bring all barriers up to the desired shielding effectiveness.
