About this file
This is a presentation detailing the operations of a Veterans Affairs (VA) Textile Care Processing Facility that processes an average of 7,000 pounds of linen daily and handled 2,632,692 pounds of soiled linen in FY24. The facility operates seven days a week across two shifts, providing linen distribution to 89 areas of the Medical Center, Community Based Outpatient Clinics (CBOCs), Mental Health Domiciliary, and other facilities.
The presentation covers the facility's workflow, quality assurance measures, and compliance with VHA Directive 1850.03 for Textile Management. Key operational details include maintaining a negative pressure environment in contaminated areas per Joint Commission requirements, utilizing Association for Linen Management (ALM) third-party testing for quality control, and employing specialized equipment including ironers, folders, and washers with specific capacity metrics. The facility employs 33.5 full-time equivalent employees (FTEE), of which 16 are veterans, and supports the Compensated Work Therapy program. From FY13 to FY24, the facility processed over 30 million pounds of linen and has demonstrated capability to support emergency operations through various disaster response teams.

Quality Assurance
❝Although contaminated textiles and fabrics in healthcare facilities can be a source of substantial numbers of pathogenic microorganisms, reports of healthcare associated diseases linked to contaminated fabrics are so few in number that the overall risk of disease transmission during the laundry process likely is negligible...use of current control measures should be continued to minimize the contribution of contaminated laundry to the incidence of healthcare associated infections.
