T590-3.5 Pipe Installation: Cut all piping square and de-burr. Clean pipe and fittings of foreign material.

SPECS-TSP(T590); Page 5 of 7

Apply a small amount of primer while ensuring that any excess is wiped off immediately. Primer should not puddle, or drip, from pipe or fittings. Apply a thin coat of PVC cement. First apply a thin layer to the pipe, next a thin layer inside the fitting, and finally another very thin layer on the pipe. Insert the pipe into the fitting.

Ensure that the pipe is inserted to the bottom of the fitting, then turn the pipe a 1/4-turn and hold for 10 seconds. Make sure that the pipe does not recede from the fitting. If the pipe is not at the bottom of the fitting upon completion, the glue joint is unacceptable and must be discarded. Pipes must cure a minimum of 30 minutes prior to handling and placing into trenches. A longer curing time may be required.

Refer to the manufacturer’s recommendations. The pipe must cure a minimum of

24 hours prior to filling with water.

For main line and lateral pipe 3-inches and larger in size, install concrete thrust blocks at all changes in direction of pipe.

For pipe used as irrigation risers, paint pipe flat-black.

For directional bore, install per Section 555.

T590-3.6 Backfill: Pipe to be installed so the following minimum backfill depths are maintained: 36-inch under roadway and 24-inch for all other sleeving, 18-inch for the main line, and 12-inch for all laterals. Backfill to be of suitable material free of rocks, stones, or other debris that is larger than 1/2-inch diameter. Compact all trenches as required by the Standard Specifications.

T590-3.7 Flushing: Prior to the placement of heads, flush all lines for a minimum of 10 minutes or until lines are completely clean of debris, whichever is longer.

Flush all lines. Use screens in all heads and adjust heads for proper coverage, avoiding excess water on walls, walks, and paving.

T590-3.8 Testing:

T590-3.8.1 Pre-construction Irrigation Operational Testing: Coordinate an operational test of the existing system and document any deficiencies prior to work within the limits of the existing irrigation system. Coordination includes coordination with the Engineer, the Maintaining Agency, and Landscape Architect of Record. This testing requires that each zone is operationally tested in the presence of the Engineer, the Maintaining Agency, and the Landscape Architect of

Record, in the proper sequence as coordinated with the Maintaining Agency from the controller. Each zone will be inspected for proper coverage and function. Each zone to be documented with video and photographed while in operation.

The determination of proper coverage and function is at the sole discretion of the

Engineer. Deficiencies, in the existing irrigation system that is to remain, is the responsibility of the Maintaining Agency.

SPECS-TSP(T590); Page 6 of 7

Take responsibility and maintenance of zones identified in the Plans for the duration of construction. Repair/replace any damaged irrigation within proposed work zones within 48 hours, with Maintaining Agency-oversight coordination prior to performing the work.

T590-3.8.2 Final Operational Testing: Upon completion of backfilling, finish grading, and contouring, test the entire system for proper operation, including electrically actuating the remote-control valves. This testing requires that each zone is operationally tested in the presence of the Engineer, the Maintaining

Agency, and the Landscape Architect of Record, in the proper sequence as coordinated with the Maintaining Agency from the controller. Run each zone until water begins to puddle or run off to determine the initial controller run times, and to determine the number of irrigation start times necessary to meet the weekly evapotranspiration requirements of the planting material in each zone. In sandy soils where no puddling occurs, calculate the required run times instead.

T590-3.8.3 Installation Completion: Notify the Engineer no less than seven calendar days in advance of completion of irrigation and Section T580 Landscape.

Refer to T580 for provisions of the landscape establishment period and contractor’s warranty.

T590-3.9 Submittals:
