About this file

This is a specification document (Section 32 31 13) for a Hydraulic Vertical Pivot Gate System detailing technical requirements, components, materials, and installation procedures for federal construction projects.

The specification requires a manufacturer's standard hydraulic vertical pivot gate system capable of minimum 2,900 open and close operations per day, with gate dimensions matching project drawings. The system must include manufacturer's standard safety devices: a pressure relief valve to prevent crushing obstructions in either direction, a shut-off power device if the balance system fails, and a manual bypass system allowing operation during power failure. The hydraulic system consists of a 3,000 psi hydraulic cylinder, limit switches, cushioned slow-down mechanisms, and adjustable stops with lock-down capability. The balance system must allow hand operation with 12 to 15 pounds of pressure and include a built-in safety control switch. Required additional features include cold weather package, stanchion, radio controls with open-close-stop functionality, detector system for free exit/safety operation, reversing edge system, magnetic lock, photo eye, stainless steel fasteners, electrical box heater, ice scrapers, and weather guard package. Access control must incorporate key switches and pedestals. Barrier options include steel construction (up to 20-foot-wide opening) with 9-gauge galvanized chain link fabric and aluminum construction (up to 25-foot-wide opening) with 6063-T5 alloy diamond screen fabric, both with sway bracing.

Installation requirements mandate manufacturer-approved installers or those with minimum five years' experience. All materials must be delivered undamaged and stored off-ground to prevent oxidation. Concrete support must conform to ASTM C94/C94M with 4,000 psi minimum 28-day compressive strength. Finishes require factory-applied DTM epoxy prime coat and acrylic urethane topcoat. Submittals requiring government approval (designated "G" to Project Officer) include shop drawings, product data, certificates of compliance, and manufacturer's instructions. Training on programmable features, operation, maintenance, and reprogramming must be provided to owner personnel. Warranty coverage must be a minimum of three years against failure from normal use.

PART 2 PRODUCTS

2.1 SYSTEM DESCRIPTION

2.1.1 Performance Requirements

Provide manufacturer’s standard safety devices as follows:

a. Provide pressure relief valve to avoid crushing obstruction encountered in either direction of travel.

b. Provide shut off power device if balance system fails.

Provide a manual bypass system which allows barrier to be opened and closed in event of power failure.

Design system to all for a minimum 2900 open and close operations per day.

Gate Height: Gate height shall match fence height as indicated on the drawings.

Gate Width: Gate width shall be as indicated on the drawings.

2.1.2 Additional Features

The following addition features shall be provided:

a. Cold Weather Package

b. Stanchion

c. Radio Controls – Provide standard open-close-stop commercial transmitters/receivers systems.

d. Provide detector system to allow free exit/safety, safety or close gate operation; system to be factory wired inside electrical box and tested.

e. Reversing Edge - Provide manufacturers standard reversing edge system.

f. Locks – Provide magnetic lock to secure gate in closed position

g. Photo Eye

h. Stainless steel fasteners

i. Heater for Electrical Box

j. Ice Scrappers

k. Weather Guard Package

2.2.3 Access Control Systems

The following access control shall be incorporated into the system:

a. Key switches

b. Pedestals

2.2 COMPONENTS

2.2.1 Hydraulic Power Unit

Hydraulic pump, motor, and reservoir will be all as one unit with fluid thermometer and fluid level sight gauge. The hydraulic system shall be designed to keep the gate locked in the closed position preventing a person from lifting the gate open when it’s in the closed position.

2.2.2 Hydraulic System

The hydraulic system shall consist of a 3000 psi hydraulic cylinder, limit switches and cushioned slow down on each end of travel, and adjustable stops with lock down in any position. Hydraulic fluid shall be the manufacturers standard fluid, factory checked, filled, and tested.

2.2.3 Balance System

Balance system shall be designed to allow barrier to be hand raised and to be hand lowered with 12 to 15 pounds of pressure. Provide built-in safety control switch capable of stopping barrier in any position should the balance system fails. Factory test and adjust the balance system to ensure gate may be manually raised and lowered with specified pressure. Signage to be added to the gate barrier must be declared at the time of order so the manufacturer can add the signs on the barrier to ensure the manufacturer can balance the operator correctly at the time of manufacturing.

2.2.4 Electrical System

Wire shall be oil and gas resistant. Provide Overload Protection relay to protect motor. Provide a Reversing Controller as required to operate motor and solenoid valves. Limit Switches shall be adjustable snap action style capable of stopping barrier at each end of travel. Provide a programmable logic board with manufacturer’s full range of available functions.
