About this file
This document is a Pennsylvania Commercial Item Description (PCID) for Evaporated Crystals (Sodium Chloride) for Water Softening/Resin Regeneration, issued by the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. The PCID covers the requirements for evaporated crystals (sodium chloride) to be used in water softening and resin regeneration, including specifications for product composition, particle size, pH, and impurity levels. The document also outlines the inspection and rejection process, as well as the packaging requirements for the product, which can be shipped in bulk or in 50-pound or 100-pound multi-walled bags.
The PCID does not include any material masters, but references the American Water Works Association (AWWA) standard B-200-03 for water softening requirements. The document is dated February 27, 2008, and supersedes a previous PCID dated December 29, 2005.

This Pennsylvania Commercial Item Description covers requirements for evaporated crystals (sodium chloride) for use in water softening/resin regeneration. Product shall conform to the following requirements, unless otherwise noted on the request for proposals or invitation for bids.
1. Requirements – The evaporated crystals (sodium chloride) for water softening/resin regeneration shall be as follows:
1.1 The evaporated crystals (sodium chloride) shall contain no substances in quantities capable of producing deleterious or injurious effects upon the health of those consuming the water softened by a cation exchange material that has been properly generated with sodium chloride, or causing the softening water to fail to meet the requirements of AWWA # B-200-03.
1.2 The material shall be homogeneous and in the dry, granular form shall be free from lint, chips or other foreign matter.
1.3 The salt shall dissolve rapidly when tested by the standard float procedure and shall not require more than 20 minutes to go into complete solution.
1.4 The evaporated salt shall be of such a fineness that 100% shall pass a ¾” sieve and not more than 5% shall pass a No. 100 sieve.
1.5 The pH of a 5% solution shall be a minimum of 5.5 and may not exceed 8.5.
Maximum Tolerance Limits (shall not exceed)
Substance Tolerance Limit Percent By Wt. Water-soluble impurities/Dry Basis.
