About this file
This document provides details on a federal solicitation for a new vessel. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Philadelphia District is seeking to procure a new diesel electric hybrid vessel through solicitation number W912BU20B0014. The vessel will be used by the New York District of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers to support its drift collection and emergency response missions. The new vessel will replace an existing one. The Army Corps of Engineers is the contracting agency managing this project.

REV ZONE DRAWN CHKD

General Notes:
1) Calculations are provided for drawing water from either the high or low seachest via the main crossover, discharging to a generator raw water pump intake (all generator circuits are nominally similar).
The engine-mounted flexible impeller pumps are rated for a maximum suction restriction of 8 ft, so the cooling pumps are designed to lift from static WL to the intake. Pumps shall be interlocked to respective generator to ensure pump operates when engine is started, stop when engine is stopped.
2) The calculations indicate a Scot 58121-4 2.5x2.5x5 centrifugal pump has significant NPSHA at rating of
130 GPM at 15 feet (6.5 PSI).
3) Calculations assume frictional losses based on commercial steel pipe for both suction and discharge.
All raw water circuits are CUNI tube which typically amounts to roughly 70% of the loss of equivalent ID steel pipe, resulting in a conservative approximation of losses.
4) Calculations are also provided for a typical raw water overboard to ensure backpressure is within
Cummins' 5 PSI limit.
5) The following are enclosed:
Cooling booster pump suction pipe and fitting equivalent lengths
Suction head calculation and NPSHa
Cooling booster pump discharge pipe and fitting equivalent lengths
Discharge and total booster system head calculation
Overboard pipe and fitting equivalent lengths
Overboard friction calculation

General Notes:
1) Calculations are provided for drawing water from either the high or low seachest via the main crossover, discharging to the hybrid power cooling circuit, which includes the switchboard heat exchanger/cooling cabinet, main propulsion motor cooling cabinet, and tailshaft stern tube bearing lubricating water circuit.
Tailshaft water circuit requires ~10 GPM and ~ 12.25 feet of head to provide 4 PSI overpressure (2 psi over ambient sea pressure plus 2 PSI differential for steady FCV operation).
Motor cooling circuit is low in the vessel and requires 27 GPM.
Switchboard cooling cabinet requires 60 GPM and requires the highest static and dynamic head.
If the hybrid cooling pump can accommodate the SWBD cooling circuit at it's total flow of 99 GPM and and TDH of 29.4 ft, all branches off the hybrid cooling pump can be accommodated & regulated.
2) Pumps shall be interlocked to switchgear and propulsion motors to ensure pump operates when electrical system is energized and/or propulsion system is in operation.
3) The calculations indicate a Goulds 3656 2.5x3x7 centrifugal pump with 5.69" impeller has significant NPSHA at rated flow of 99 GPM at 29 feet (13 PSI).
4) Calculations assume frictional losses based on commercial steel pipe for both suction and discharge.
All raw water circuits are CUNI tube which typically amounts to roughly 70% of the loss of equivalent ID steel pipe, resulting in a conservative approximation of losses.
5) The following are enclosed:
Hybrid cooling pump suction pipe and fitting equivalent lengths
Suction head calculation and NPSHa
Hybrid cooling pump discharge to switchboard cooling cabinet pipe and fitting equivalent lengths
Discharge and total system head to switchboard cooling cabinet calculation

* Flowrate through 2" branch to switchboard cooling cabinet is limited by the flow control valve to 60 GPM max. Similarly, FCVs will regulate propulsion motor cooling cabinet circuit and tailshaft lubricating circuit.
** Flowrate through 2 1/2" pump discharge and subsequent 3" common main reflects all hybrid cooling system flow and associated pressure drop.

General Notes:
1) Calculations are provided for the exhaust routing of ref 1 for the outboard-most generators P & S, which have the longest run. The port inboard engine has the shortest overall run but incorporates two 8" 90 degree elbows. For conservatism, the calculations assume two 8" elbows in the pipe run as opposed to one 8" and one 10" as provided on the outboard-most exhaust runs.
2) The calculations indicate the silencer and routing as indicated on reference 1 develop less than 50% of the manufacturer's backpressure limit at rated conditions, using conservative assumptions. The silencer contributes 0.77 in Hg to overall backpressure, also within recommended limit of 1 in Hg, and exhaust velocity is 70% of the recommended 10,000 FPM limit.
3) Calculations reflect the following manufacturer data (see Ref 2 & 3):
Make: Cummins Silencer: Nelson 49582U, Critical Grade
Model: QSK-19 Max Exhaust Velocity: ft/min
HP: 800 Inlet Diameter: in
RPM: 1800 Inlet Area: in

Male pipe thread connections through 3.5", 4", and larger are 125/150# ASA drilled flanges. Drains are standard on all silencers with a 9" body diameter or larger. Side-in end-out configuration is designed for side inlet flow only.
Unit cannot be run backward. All dimensions are in inches.
In du st ria l Re si de nt ia l Cr iti ca l Standard Spark Arresting Exhaust Silencers provide high efficiency spark arresting and exceptional sound attenuation where fire hazards must be eliminated and noise must be minimized. Three attenuation grades (industrial, residential, and critical) are available with spark arresting efficiencies
Type 1 Spark Arresting Exhaust Silencers exceeding 95%. Heavy gauge material and fully welded construction provide maximum strength and longer service life in these units. Applications include stationary and portable gen sets, oil field equipment, propulsion engines on ships, and gas compression equipment.
End-In, End-Out Design
General Notes:
1) Calculations are provided for drawing bilge water from the forepeak, the most restrictive suction branch, discharging through the bilge pump discharge circuit.
2) The calculations indicate Flowmax 8DS with impeller trim of 4.47 will provide positive NPSHA and flow for the most severe suction condition. Cavitation inception will be less likely when drawing from all remaining bilge branch suctions.
3) Bilge main, branch, and pump sizing calculations per 46CFR 56.50-50 and -55 are provided in ref 1.
4) The following are enclosed:
Forepeak suction pipe and fitting equivalent lengths
Suction head calculation and NPSHa
Bilge pump discharge pipe and fitting equivalent lengths
Discharge and total system head calculation for suction from forepeak

2) K calculated from tabular Leq/D and ft values where applicable; K = ft(Leq/D) or directly from tabular data, where given.
3) Valve or fitting equivalent length based on pipe ID: Leq = (Leq/D)xD or Leq = KD/ft when K taken directly from tabular data.
4) Hose friction factor assumed similar to Sch 40 clean commercial steel pipe, based on available manufacturer information.
