About this file

Appendix B is a detailed document outlining infrastructure and site requirements for an Airport Weather Radar (AWR) system for the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). The document requests vendors to provide comprehensive specifications across five key areas: site criteria, physical infrastructure requirements, utility requirements, environmental requirements, and additional attachments. Specific details are sought on elements such as clear area around radar, antenna/radome dimensions, tower requirements, foundation specifications, shelter dimensions, electrical power needs, communications protocols, operating temperature ranges, and electromagnetic interference standards.

The document is part of a Market Survey/Request for Information (RFI) conducted by the FAA's Aviation Weather Sensors program office to assess vendor capabilities for a potential future AWR contract. The RFI is explicitly not a solicitation or commitment to procurement, but rather an informational gathering exercise to evaluate market conditions and potential vendor capabilities. The FAA indicates that if a competition is pursued, it may limit participation to vendors who respond to this Market Survey, with the potential Screening Information Request (SIR)/RFP to be announced separately.

Appendix B – Infrastructure and Site Requirements To assist with planning, budgeting, and site feasibility options, the FAA requires all interested vendors include responses and/or specifications for each element of the below infrastructure and site requirements associated with its proposed Airport Weather Radar (AWR) system. If a range is appropriate, the response must indicate min/max values. If assumptions are required (e.g., tower height depends on scan angle), note those as well.

1. Site Criteria

a. What is the minimum clear area around radar for beam operation?

b. What are the line-of-sight or obstructions limitations?

c. What is the antenna site tolerances (e.g., allowable proximity to moving objects or other structures)?

d. What is the impact of ground clutter or terrain on performance?

2. Physical Infrastructure Requirements

a. Radar Antenna/Radome Dimensions: What are the diameter and wind/ice loading requirements?

b. Tower Requirements: What are the available tower heights, footprint(s), and load rating(s)?

c. Foundation Requirements: What type slabs are required for the tower and or shelter, depth ranges, sizes (e.g., 12’x12’, 24’x24’), and load estimates?

d. Shelter Requirements: What are the required footprints (e.g., 10’x12’, 12’x16’), internal clearances, HVAC needs, etc.?

e. Equipment Layout: What is the breakdown of equipment that is integrated at tower level vs ground shelter?

3. Utility Requirements

a. Electrical Power: What are the estimated continuous and peak load (kW), voltage, phase requirements?

b. Communications: Confirm your company only supports IP based communications.

4. Environmental Requirements

a. What is the operating temperature and humidity range?

b. What lightning protection and/or grounding, bonding standards are adhered to?

c. What Electromagnetic Interference (EMI)/Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) standards are adhered to?

5. Additional Attachments (if available or applicable) Provide a sample of your company’s:

a. Site criteria document or checklist.

b. Shelter and standard equipment layout diagram.

c. Power and data interface specs.
