About this file

This document is a detailed specification sheet for custom flow cryostats requisitioned by the Ion Storage Group for the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The specifications outline precise technical requirements for a flow cryostat that must be compatible with a ColdEdge Stinger liquid-cryogen-free recirculating helium gas closed-cycle cryocooler apparatus. Key technical specifications include a central cold finger capable of cooling to 4 K with at least 500 mW cooling power, a radiation shield with 20 W cooling power at 40 K, and ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) compatibility on a 2.75" ConFlat flange.

Additional critical requirements include specific dimensional constraints, temperature sensor and heater configurations, and precise mating surface specifications. The cryostat must feature a silicon diode temperature sensor with four-wire connection, a 50 W internal heater for temperature control, an external heater for helium return frost reduction, and UHV electrical feedthroughs. All in-vacuum components must have a maximum outer diameter of 1.500" to enable clearance inside a 1.63" inner diameter vacuum port, with carefully specified mating surface extensions and bolt circle configurations for precise mounting and integration.

Text version

Detailed specifications for Ion Storage Group custom flow cryostat requisition.

The flow cryostats must meet ALL of the following specifications in order to meet our need:

1. Must be compatible with existing ColdEdge Stinger liquid-cryogen-free recirculating helium gas closed-cycle cryocooler apparatus, including successful prior demonstration of operation of flow cryostats with ColdEdge Stinger at specified design cooling powers and temperatures.

2. Flow cryostat must have a central cold finger that cools to base temperature with a cooling power of at least 500 mW at 4 K (in a stand-alone test chamber) when used with a ColdEdge

Stinger system.

3. Flow cryostat must have an additional ring-shaped mating surface to attach a radiation shield, with an available cooling power of 20 W at 40 K (in a stand-alone test chamber) when used with a ColdEdge Stinger system.

4. Flow cryostat must be on a 2.75” ConFlat (CF) flange, with all in-vacuum materials and construction suitable for ultra-high-vacuum (UHV) operation.

5. Flow cryostat must be provided with an external heater for the helium return to reduce frosting.

6. Central cold finger top must have a silicon diode temperature sensor with four-wire connection and a 50 W internal heater to control the temperature of the central cold finger tip.

7. Radiation shield must have a silicon diode temperature sensor with four-wire connection.

8. Cryostat must have a UHV electrical feedthrough for the temperature sensor and heater wires.

9. Central cold finger mating surface must be 0.75” diameter with four (4) M3 tapped holes (with helicoil inserts) on a 0.50” diameter bolt circle

10. Radiation shield mating surface must be a ring with outer diameter 1.313” with six (6) M2.5 tapped holes (with helicoil inserts) on a 1.125” diameter bolt circle.

11. The mating surface of the central cold finger must extend 7.760” into the vacuum space past the inner surface of the 2.75” CF flange.

12. The mating surface of the radiation shield must extend 7.310” into the vacuum space past the inner surface of the 2.75” CF flange.

13. All in-vacuum components must have a maximum outer diameter of 1.500” to enable clearance inside a 1.63” inner diameter vacuum port (with CF2.75” flange) into our vacuum chamber.
